High speed Admiral motor

2001 48v Club car
I replaced stock motor with High speed Admiral motor.

When you depress pedal I would get a high pitch low volume squeal.

I took it to a local cart shop, first he said it was missing a field, could be a connection do you want me too take the motor apart and check it? My thoughts were, It's new, I'll return it. I didn't want to void any warranty. After I told him of my plans, Then he said the only problem is that high demand motor needed a higher amperage controller and 4g cables.

It seemed like he wasn't being honest. After talking to him sounded like he hadn't really checked much of anything. When I pinned him down on what he had done he said my cart was a IQ cart and all he did was plug in a code reader and determined it had a missing field from the code. Then did a 180 and said my controller was good but needed a bigger one. He came to this conclusion without doing a thing like this was it all along.

So, wouldn't the stock controller turn the wheels. If the high speed motor needed a upgraded controller to perform like it was intended. The stock controller should still turn the wheels jacked up with no load

I'm thinking of buying a stock Club car motor and returning it to stock. Before I do I thought I would ask other opinions.

I've been doing alot of research the last couple of days on Admiral motor's I'm in the market looking at the Admiral MOT-A3 its for torque. I have read a couple of different times about noises coming from Admiral motor's. So your's in not turning? who installed it? Yes I would agree with the cart guy that the controller and wire upgrade etc will improve the performance of your Admiral motor, but your stock set up should work also just not at what it could do? Other guy's are going to have to post here to ask you other questions.

I had always intended to upgrade the controller and cables. But when trouble came up with new motor. I wanted to know the cause before I threw money at it in fog of confusion!

I installed motor, easy R&R. Now maybe I misspoke. The wheels turn freely when spun by hand, the motor turns with ease. It's just it won't turn under power of the motor.

I thought with stock controller that it would go even though it wouldn't be performing at its best.

I don't know number right of hand. It's 12hp with IQ sensor for my cart. WOW!

Whole new question would the stock IQ sensor work with the new Admiral motor? Could it be that simple? Would the new motor require a different IQ sensor?

Sounds like the controller is straining the power demand of the new motor is probably more than what the controller can provide.

250 amp Curtis should make it spin. I read that a six or twelve volt battery is sufficient to test the motor.

I'm getting the voltage at the motor, I'm starting to think the motor was D.O.A.
I don't know how to tell if the controller is putting out amperage, but it has the voltage.

Test the motor and see if it works. You can do it using a 12 volt charger. Wheels off the ground. At least then you can single out one or the other.


....and no, there are motors that just wont work with stock controllers or even aftermarket controllers without the correct field mapping. This is more common with SEPEX carts. They might work for a bit then burn up either the motor, controller or both. You can't just take the hottest motor you can buy and use it on a stock controller. Something will give eventually.

Is this a regen or series cart? I may very well have more experience on here that most with Admirals, I've installed several of them and wouldn't run anything else in my Club Car. They all have been rock solid. Mine is a hi-speed regen, but I am driving it with 2 gauge cables, a 400 amp solenoid and a 500 amp Alltrax, I run about 28 mph on the flat but also have serious torque, I can pull my SUV with out a problem and never gets hot, infact I tow carts around town when they break down. Never an issue.

The first thing I would like mentioned is get the motor number to make sure it's the correct motor for your cart. Where did you buy it?

Cheapjeep: I think it is a Regen, it has the rocker reverse switch and what they call a IQ sensor with a pigtail on end of motor. 2001 or 02
