Whats needed to convert a '91 36v coil cart to 48v

My neighbor has a 1991 CC with the coils and it is ready for new batteries, the question is can he replace the 6v batteries with 8v and get a new charger? will the system handle 48v?

I'm doing the same thing to my 1990 CC DS and sense so much of the electrical system was in bad shape and the coil system is a poor system, I called scottyb about a solid state 48V system, but I'm going to run 8 6volt batteries. I think this would be a lot less trouble in the long run and you can still run the same motor. Hope this helps you.

you need a bit more.......the resistor coils arn,t gonna handle it for long they will melt over time might happen fast might take its time but will happen......the motor will be fine even better then a 48 volt one but if you want to do this right i suggest you contact scottyB here............he has helped so many people do this switch i can,t think of anyone else better.................................

I thought I read somewhere that the coils would not like it but I could not find it anywhere.

Oh, they're not going to like it one bit! They're going to get extremely hot over it, and could possably cause a fire under the right conditions.

Like everyone has said, it's time for the conversion away from the resistor coil setup. Trust me, once they get over spending the cash for the upgrades, they'll be much happier with the cart!

What do you guys see in speed difference (if any) with a controller vs. resistors?

My resistor cart shows GPS at 15MPH.

I contacted Scotty B and here is my list (technichally a list straight from him btw)

Okay, I would suggest you need the following components for it:
Throttle conversion kit
C54 ( 500 alltrax, 400 solenoid, & potentiometer)
2g cable set - plus two extra cables since I'm going with 8 6v batteries
HD F&R switch
48v battery charger with a plug to fit your cart
D&D torque motor

Now I removed the cost for each item as I'll let him do the informing on that part. But outside of batteries I think I just need some 12g cable to hook up small things like the key switch and other parts to the solenoid etc.

In other words Im replacing everything, if your motor looks good you could get away with keeping yours i guess.

It looks like he would be looking at @ $775 for the C52 conversion kit, $285 for a charger plus $$ for batteries. Those of you that have gone to 48v did you go with 8v batteries or add 2 6v batteries and where did you put them?

I've never compared my resistor cart to my controller cart as far as speed goes since I use them for yard duty and hardly ever leave my property with them. The resistor cart is a 36 Volt and just can't haul or pull as much as my 48 Volt controller cart does.

I will say that my resistor cart is constantly needing something or another done to it where my controller cart has only needed recharged at the end of the day. Both of my carts were badly abused by the former owners, with the controller cart being the more abused of the two. To be totally honest, the resistor cart is broken once again and unless something drastic happens, will not be getting fixed until I can afford to purchase the conversion kit from Scotty for it. I'm that fed up with fixing it just to have something else break on it.

Another plus is the run time is greatly enhanced.

The resistor cart gulps power because when you even touch the go pedal, all the pack voltage is used.

The controller cart sips power because when you hit the go pedal, only what is needed to move at the speed you are wanting to go is pulled from the pack.
