Default 1979 CC conversion to solid state

I picked up a 1979 (if I read the S.N. correctly) Club Car at an auction last year and am just now getting to it. It looks pretty decent, not all banged up, included a charger, but had one flat tire. No batteries, of course, and 2 of the 5 solenoid/relays were missing. No matter, because:

I have a Curtis 1204/1205 controller that I'm going to install. We lashed 'er up for a quicky test and it seemed to work fine. A few questions:

What is the little black gadget that's attached to the F/R switch? It's wired to one of the 2 microswitches on the F/R selector.

How long are the motor brushes supposed to be? We removed the dust cover and inspected things, made sure the brushes weren't stuck in their holders, etc. All seemed well, and the tops of the brushes were a bit above the holders. The motor is a 2Hp GE, just like my old Legend cart.

Are brake parts available? The master cylinder is full of rust, and I imagine the wheel cylinders are the same.

The game plan is to install the controller and the associated pot box and get things all wired up. We'll move the volt- and amp-meters from the old Legend, along with the DC -> DC converter. Next step will be to rebuild the brakes and anything else that needs attention, then reinstall the body. Most of the body attaching bolts are stripped, so had nuts on them. That needs correction, to make it easy to R&R the body in the future.

Any ideas on my questions and/or suggestions for additional improvements "while we're at it"?
