Grounding - Different Voltages

Hello,

I'm having trouble getting a straight answer on this one. If I have a light set, the stock lights for the Club Car Precedent with the stock pull out on/off switch. I want to switch over to an LED rocker switch.

If the lights are running at 12v and I have a voltage meter running at 48v can I just pigtail the negative side of the voltage meter and run it over to the switch for the light kit in order to get the switch to light up?

Essentially can I ground a 12v switch with a 48v negative?

I even called a golf cart repair shop and couldn't get a straight answer on this one.

I have my switch grounded to the 48 volt b- and no problem so far. However, my switch is to a voltage reducer, so I have full pack voltage running through the switch and the switch is rated at 120 volt.
Also, my old DS has the lights grounded to b- on the controller and that goes to the 48 volt b- on the pack

I really don't want to fry anything. Can anyone else approve the move to ground an LED rocker switch for a 12 volt light to a 48v voltage meter negative side?

Will the lights still work and will the voltage meter still work without frying anything?

Ground is ground so no issue. What year cart do you have? Some factory kits plug directly into the harness..

I have a 2008.5 Precedent.

I have included a very crudely drawn wiring diagram for what I want to do. Can you please verify that what I want to do is okay?

Ground is ground. Everything grounds back to the same place so no, it doesn't matter.

I'm going to be working on this tomorrow. I'll put the cart in Tow mode. Should I also pull the positive off the battery?

You should always break the circuit whenever working on these systems or you run the risk of damaging the cart or worse yet damaging yourself

Your drawing does not show the 12 volt source for its ground point in the 48 volt pack, I think it matters? It could show 36 volts at the led in the switch. For 3 or 4 dollars add a fuse holder with a small fuse in it for a safe guard, the fuse will pop faster than you can react to a short.
