Default 20 minute steering wheel change

I was not looking forward to replacing my '07 CC Precedent steering wheel after reading the many posts about how difficult it was. I removed the clipboard, loosened the center nut and delivered a few shots of WD40 around the inner rim. I placed both feet on the dash as instructed, lifted up on the old steering wheel with my knees and used a brass rod and a small 4 lb. mallet to tap down on the center nut. I tapped about 10 times (not Thor-like whacks, just good solid hits) and looked. Movement. I whacked again about 10 times and felt the wheel go loose on my knees. Voila, it was off and the new one went on in a jiffy. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then. Today was my day.

Those horror stories you've heard are based on DS cars.... I've never had a Precedent steering wheel that required anything more than a ball peen hammer against the bolt to shake it loose. The Hex shaft design allows for it to only seize against six sides instead of all those little splines like on a DS.

A Club Car steering wheel puller. It'll do one of two things, it'll either pop the wheel off after applying lots of pressure from an impact wrench or it'll begin to warp the steering wheel into an egg shape with the insert staying in place. If it doesn't come off you must cut the plastic steering wheel all the way up to the steel insert, rip the plastic off of the insert with a pry bar and use an air chisel to knock the insert off of the splines.

I just replaced my 09 precedent wheel. Not much trouble getting it off, but when I put it back on, I gave it a liberal glob of axle grease on the hex shaft end. Hopefully this will help for next time.

I got my 1983 DS steering wheel off in a few minutes with a good shot of WD-40 and a big rubber mallet.

Hit the old wheel from behind in a few different spots and it popped right up.

Those old metal wheels were always easier to remove for some reason. Not sure why, but I've never had an issue with one of those. It's the newer plastic ones that are a PAIN
