You put of on the wrong side of the switch you should hook it to the side that has power only when key is on

Only has 2 wires. That would be a hot and a ground, right?

Yes but, technically it is positive and negative not ground as nothing is ever grounded to the cart frame ever! So one - negative wire goes to the battery pack main negative. And the + positive wire goes to any battery pack + source like key switch or main. You might just be on the wrong side of the key switch.... like somebody already said.
What kind of cart is it?

I recall only 2 posts on the key switch, if that's the case (as I remember it) then just move your meter wire to the other side and it should come on and off with the key as you wish

There's no harm in leaving it on all the time either. Our original test meter was on for 2 years before I lost track of the cart/owner. It sat outside in the rain , on, for 2 years, never a blip.

Thanks, Scottyb. The meter is awesome, by the way. Like I said earlier, starts off at 50.6 and will drop off as low as 45.4 on an incline.

A 5v drop under load is okay for most 48v packs.

Scottyb, have you ever had anyone ask you about a dimmer? Do you think its possible to wire in a dimmer? I was thinking at night I could turn it down so it dosent blind you at night. I like to stay in stealth mode as much as possible while hunting. Just a thought. Ive also thought about installing it like under the seat or something. Thanks for your input. You sure help a lot of us cart people.

You might can put a piece of auto window tint over the display to dim it. I also thought originally about putting it under the seat until I was told about the 48 volt pair behind the dash. The only concern about under the seat is you will probably forget about it until the pack gets to low??

I thought about wiring mine to the spare toggle on the dash. I had mounted a row of these to do various things and have a spare. Of course these are illuminated so........there you go.
