There are no really cheap ways to make an electric cart faster ... you will need a gear change? or a motor change? And possibly a controller upgrade - along with all the usual system upgrades to cables and F&R to make a reliable faster cart.

That 36v motor in a 48v cart should have gotten you into the low 20's already.

So we are looking at 2 possibilities.

1. You are guessing your speed, and are going 20+ already. Confirm current speed with a GPS or GPS phone app.

2. Something is wrong with your current setup, which is holding you back. Tired batteries, bad wires/wire connections, F/R switch, or a combination of these.

Cheap fixes? You've already done the best one, the 36v motor into the 48v cart swap; Larger tires will pick up another 1-2 mph on flat ground, but with a proportionate drop in torque; get a set of Honduh or Mazda rims, 4x100 lug pattern, something less than 21-22" high unless you're planning on lifting the cart. You will probably need spacers, as the tires may rub on the leaf spring/body.

Air up your tires. At the expense of a bumpy ride, airing your tires up from 20 to 30 psi will pick up another 0.5mph.

Tired batteries? Everybody here wants you to buy new Trojans. Sure, that would be great. But lets be honest. How many of us need 30+ mile range? My cart gets driven less than 1 mile/day. Read up on the Epsom Salts trick. Basically free, what have you got to lose? (Disclaimer-I have never tried this)

EDIT: You never answered your previous question. Were the brushes interchangeable between the mid 80's 36v motor and the 1998 48v motor?

The battery's are good and I'm using a phone app. I'm going to try new cables any suggestions on brand? I ended up buying new brushes from custom carts

You might want to figure out what the specific problem is, before throwing any more money at this...

You've got something obviously wrong; a 36v motor in a 48v cart should run low 20's, no problem.

I would start with that motor, as you have already indicated that you have had problems with it. Pull it, and take it to a DC motor specialist. There's a lot more to a motor than just brushes... They will probably go thru it for very little money, and make sure it is 100%.

While the motor is out, use a quality Volt/Ohm Meter to check each of your wires for resistance. Take a good look at each end connection as well. Good, clean metal, no frayed wiring, no corrosion. Use some dielectric grease, or even just some plain old Vaseline, to protect the metal.

Look carefully at your F/R switch. You can remove the cam on the center of the F/R switch, and clean up the buttons and contact points with some Scotchbrite, to ensure a good contact. Draw a diagram so you're sure you hook everything back up correctly...

I have converted more carts from 36 to 48v than anybody I know of. My experience tells me this cart should not be running in the low 20s. My customers tell me their carts are running in the low 20s even on 22 inch tires.
So what are you basing your advice on this time?
The Epson salt ads?

Really? You think that a 36v motor in a 48v cart should only pull 15mph?
