Wire Melting On Motor

Cart quit running, towed it home. Guys from golf course said it was the batteries. Put new trojans in, still won't run. Put new master solenoid in still won't run. Had someone else look at it and he found the wire on the top of motor had melted and was no longer attached to the neg post on the motor. Bolts had also melted and could not be removed. Put new wire end on and added a bolt on top to hold the wire in place. It has now done the same thing. If I remove the motor and take it to a motor shop and have them solder the post so it no longer moves, will this solve the issue or is it the controller causing the short or because the post is moving and touching the hot side to the right? You could hear it sparking when the first solenoid clicks. I live in the hills around Austin TX and use this old cart to take the dogs to the lake and park. I also wonder if the hills are too much for the old cart and is causing it to heat up. It is a 1984 Club Car.

don,t solder anything you need to take motor apart and see which of the studs is it.....there are 2 studs that you can replace and 2 more that are attached to field coil in motor.........so 1st get motor off and see what your dealing with if it did this more than once theres something going on inside motor......either 1 of studs is broken off inside from field coil or one of the other ones is toching something.....once you get motor off and apart it should stick out like a sore thumb.............................

Is there a trick to taking the motor out. I don't have a jack.... Is there a way to take this out without having to jack it up?

yeah you can get it out without a jack....keep in mind its heavy......should be 3 bolts holding it on and a bracket on the bottom....................lot easier with jack but can be done without.............................

I have been looking for a video showing which bolts to loosen. There are lots of bolts so is there a way for you to tell me which ones are the 3 I need to loosen? Thanks again, Janice

the 3 on the rear part of it.....not the ones up by cables but look to the rear they should be 3/8 inch heads...........................

I think I see it. My camera battery died I will upload pictures tomorrow to be sure we do it right.

Any idea if the motor can be fixed by me or should I take it to an alternator shop once I crack the motor case?

You will also need to replace those cables. I don't know why they are all taped up but those carry a lot of current and you'll have the same problem again with poor cables. I would suggest to replace any that look burned or melted in any way.

They were touching they got hot and melted the coating. I have a friend visiting with Lou Gehrig's disease and I needed to transport her to the swimming pool shower and needed the cart to run for a mile. It was a temporary fix.

OK If it weren't for bad luck I wouldn't have any luck today.

I had the motor rebuilt cost me $175 I was excited and happy about that. The guy that took it out came today to put it back in. He wired it wrong. The wires from the motor, forward/reverse and 3 of the cables between batteries the plastic coating melted off and one of the metal end connectors that was connected to the motor melted. The posts coming from the motor seem to be ok. The motor was still rather warm 20 minutes after this happened. I was not here but I was told the smoke alarm went off in the garage and the guy burned himself trying to disconnect the cable.

What is the chance that the motor is ok? What is the chance that the batteries are OK? What is the chance that anything is ok after that?

I can not believe this.........
