Default 96 48v regent 1 club car

I am replacing my stock cables to 4 guage. Can anyone tell me what the coil resistor does that has a 6 guage wire running from
the second solenoid to one side of the resistor coil and then back to the other side of the same solenoid. The coil has 4 loops.
Can i disconnect it? What purpose does it solve?
Thanks in advance
bob

It is an early attempt at regenerative braking. Any aftermarket Control system eliminates it, I suppose you can disconnect it without ill effects.
