used old cart battery testing help
I just got a '88 CC DS for almost nothing. It has used trojan batteries in it that still had a 60% SOC open voltage after sitting for a while. The carts not drivable (yet) but I wanted to test the batteries and see what I was working with.
I charged them and they all took the charge pretty quickly (4-5 hours). It topped at 40.x volts off the charger. I checked each battery and they all showed 100% SOC per table. After 12 hours here are my open voltage readings. 1) 6.24 2) 6.21 3) 6.39 4) 6.39 5) 6.39 6) 6.21 After 24 hours here are my open voltage readings. 1) 6.21 2) 6.17 3) 6.37 4) 6.38 5) 6.37 6) 6.18 I know I need to take SG or load test but I don't have either of these tools (yet). Judging by open voltage I'd say #1, 2 and 6 are not holding charge at all even with no load. Can I improve these readings by actually discharging the batteries and charging over several cycles or are they doomed for replacement? |

Re: used old cart battery testing help
Well if they know they're keeping the answer to themselves.
So you want me to connect a 12v car charger to a 6v battery? That certainly doesn't sound right. I did charge the whole set, two 6v batteries at a time in series with a car charger when I first got the cart and batts. I then charged all 6 with the 36v charger till it shut off. I waited 12 hours and then 24 hours. I posted the numbers at the top of this thread. |

Re: used old cart battery testing help
NO
most car chargers are 12v and 6v, if you have a 6v charger, charge your 6v battery with your 6v charger,, if you only have a 12v charger then charge two of them in series, how old are these batteries?? Quote:

Re: used old cart battery testing help
I've got a 12v car charger and I have already used it as mentioned before. Then I used golf cart charger till it turned off automatically.
I don't know how old the batteries are but would your answer on restoring full charge capability differ from 1 year old batts vs. 4 year old batts? The low batts do charge fully but drop over 12-24 hours to around 70% SOC. |

Re: used old cart battery testing help
yes you have a good chance if they are 1 year old, than if they were 4 years old,,, and i did read your post,,, that is why im telling you to, try and charge battery 1 2 and 6 again with the car charger a few times and see if they will come back to life, you won't know, if you don't try, and if you have trojan batteries like it says in your first post,, there is a letter and a number stamped in the flat part on the lead on the battery post, that will tell you what year they are,
like A 9 would be jan 2009 Quote:

Re: used old cart battery testing help
Good to hear cycling may increase the battery full charge holding capability. I have the car charger connected to two 6v batts right now to try again.
I checked the date and it's "E6" on all the batteries. Not good news according to what you said about date codes. Still 3 of them hold a full charge for days now.... I bought a load tester and all passed, the three low ones barely passed, right on the edge of "good" and "weak". |
