Default Club Car Brake Lights Stay On

2010 Precedent, electric, when the ignition is on, the brake lights stay on. Turn off ignition, brake lights go off. When headlights are on, tail lights ok. Can't find a brake light switch. Has a electric array of some type underneath the rubber of the brake pad with electric connectors into the light system. When that is disconnected, all lights, brake and tail lights go out.

Help.

The attached diagram should show you what's going on. The switch behind the brake pedal is the brake switch on the diagram. It is simply a normally open contact switch. You may not have a timer. It most likely would be under the pedal group access panel next to the brake cables. There is a relay behind the dash panel that is labeled brake relay in the diagram. It sometimes fails.
You're actual wiring is probably a bit different, but the attachment might give you enough info to do a little bit of troubleshooting.
It sounds like the relay behind the dash has failed in the closed position.
They are readily available and not expensive.
Remember..........this information is worth every penny you paid for it!

May not be your problem but this happened on mine and it turned out to be the rubber floor mat was touching the peddle and causing it to not fully retract and the lights stayed on. Might be worth a quick look. Good luck.

I mentioned the relay, but it could be the brake switch staying closed....due to the mat as mentioned by txbonds, or some other reason.

It doesn't seem to have a brake light switch as on the older versions. The old ones had a contact switch with a plunger that would get stuck open or closed. This seems to have some type of contact film under the rubber part of the brake pedal, see attached photo, that only has an electrical lead from it. Appears to be operated by some pressure on the brake pedal itself. If there is a contact switch, I can't find it.

The rubber pad is too tight against the pressure pad. Common problem. Personally, I HATE that design. It's nearly impossible to get them working right.

Well that would make sense, but the brake lights stay on after removing the rubber brake pedal covering. Just as you see in the photo, with the ignition on, the brake lights are on. Can't get them off.

Sounds like a bad pressure switch. Unplug the two wires underneath the access cover under the floormat and see if they go off. If they do, you've got a bad pressure switch.

NOTE: I posted this "fix" long ago. My brake light switch is of a different style, but is also pressure activated. Do the VOM thing on the two leads off the pressure switch to see if it closes/opens under pressure. If it never opens when pressure removed it has failed. If it works normally then the relay has failed....in my opinion. Replacing the relay fixed the problem since my pressure switch was ok.

My 09 Precedent electric has this lighting system installed.

Headlights, brake lights, horn, tail lights and turn signals. Everything is working OK right now, except the brake lights.

The brakes are actuated by a small pressure activated strip switch that has been inserted just behind the rubber brake pedal pad. It's a very small switch. I have checked that out and with foot pressure applied the circuit is completed, and the brake lights should go on.

I located the brake relay behind the "instrument panel". It is an HDI-048D-A30PMS. It has 4 wires connected. Orange, Blue/White, Green/White, and Black. Two of the terminals are labeled com and NO. I have a Precedent Maintenance and Service manual and the wire color codes match exactly. I also found a nice schematic that shows that the orange and blue/white wires go to the coil and the green/white and blue wires come off the NO contacts. I confirmed with a VOM that the NO contacts are open. I measured the coil resistance and I believe it was/is? in the 2K vicinity.

I fiddled with the switch and actually had the brake lights working normally. I put everything back together and the brake lights do not work, again, although everything else still works normally. I shorted out the brake pedal pressure switch and the brake lights still did not work so I do not think that circuit/switch is the problem.

So......it certainly appears to me that the brake relay is the culprit.

If your brake lights will illuminate when the key is on, but not illuminate when the key is off the relay is functioning properly. A failed relay can not cause the lights to stay on unless the pressure pad itself has failed closed. The only purpose the relay serves is to kill power to the brake light circuit when the keyswitch is turned off. In this situation the brake lights won't turn off. Power is getting through the relay.
