Default Series headlights

On a cart with 6 8volts, can you wire 2 12volt lights in series across 3 of the batteries? If not why?

No, you will be putting 24 volts to both 12 volt lights. Many people are running 12 volt lights off of 2 8 volt batteries (16V total). It generally will work but will shorten the life of the bulbs. Your best bet, which I am sure you already know, is to add a voltage reducer. You can go 48V to 12V or go 16V to 12V, with the latter being a little cheaper.

Whatever you decide to do, test it with a volt meter prior to sending power to the lights.

Yes! It's not really good for your batteries, but you could switch sets every now and then. I did the same thing on a 36V cart using the entire battery pack and an ignition ballast resistor. I have since bought 48V bulbs ( H3's ) as I'm going to do a 48V conversion pretty soon. Actually the 48V lamps are plenty bright enough using 36V ( at least for my use, anyway! )

@ Jason, he said he was going to series the bulbs which will be 24V, at least that's what I understood his question to mean. :)

Yes, for some reason I was thinking each light would use 12 of the 24 and be ok. Then I could save the converter money. I will probably just give the 16 on parallel and have bright lights. Bulbs are cheap.
