Agm batteries

My neighbor gained access to mr12-300 agm batteries for $25 each. He has a 36 volt cart with 6@6 volts. The agm batts are the same size so he removed the 6 volts and put the 6@12 volts in. He wired it as 2 36 volt sets and paralleled the sets as the supply. He swears it performs as good as new.

My questions are
1. Has anyone else done this
2. What problems might occur
3. Are those agm batteries as good as or comparable to a traditional gc batt.

4. My cart is a 48 volt with 6@8 volt. If I put 4 of them in it what should I expect performance wise?

AGMs are great batteries. Better (not necessarily more cost effective though) than gel or flooded cell in most applications.

...however, there is some question about equalizing (conditioning) flooded cell vs AGM. You can get conflicting information from different sources. This is what I think I know. AGMs should be conditioned 3-4 times per year depending upon the situation. Flooded cell more frequently. Since the Club Car computer actually controls the charger I am not sure if you are able to program the cart to use different charging profiles for flooded, gel or AGM batteries. I would feel comfortable using the same charger/charging profile for flooded or AGM batteries, but definitely not gel.

Regarding the series/parallel configs. The above site provides a lot of info. As long as you use the same voltage/capacity/age and technology of cells in the bank there is no problem using the series/parallel connections. The parallel connection will simply give your battery pack the ability to provide the required voltage for about twice the time.

I believe these batteries charge at a lower rate and to a lower end voltage than open wet cell. This is the case if they are ventless. I'm not sure as to what you got.

I've attached a charger troubleshooting guide from Lester.

Due to the lower internal resistance of AGM batteries they can actually be charged faster than flooded cell batteries.
