Upgrading to a controller
I have a 1993 DS 36V club car and looking to upgrade to a controller unit instead of the vglide. My Vglide just burnt and thought it maybe a good time to upgrade. I am really thinking hard about it because I would like to lift it and put some bigger tires to take to my hunting lease. Can any one make and suggestions on which controller would work for best for this. When not at my hunting lease it would be used around the camp ground and yard.

Re: Upgrading to a controller
I have a 1979 CC that had the solenoid/resistor bank speed control. When I bought it, 2 solenoids were missing, and testing determined that 2 more were faulty. No matter, as the plan from the start was to install a Curtis controller that I had picked up at the scrapyard. It's a Model 1205, rated at 400 amps/36 volts, and it's controlled by a 5K potentiometer, also from the scrapyard.
We tore out all the wiring on the cart and started from scratch, mostly going by the diagrams furnished by Curtis, in the 1205 manual. The F/R switch worked OK, but I had also picked up a solenoid reversing switch from the scrapyard. It was installed on a pallet truck, and the coils are rated at 24 volts. A quick test determined that I needed 15 Ohm power resistor to operate it on 36 volts, so that is now installed on the cart, and the F/R switch is an Allen-Bradley industrial selector switch on the dash. This cart is replacing an antique Legend that has served me well. I just wanted to play with the Curtis, etc. It's really nice to have the stepless speed control. |

Re: Upgrading to a controller
Get with ScottyB once he gets back from his holiday trip.
http://www.cartsunlimited.net/Scotty...rsion_Kit.html He'll tell you exactly what you need once you tell him what you're wanting to do with your cart. If stepping up to 48 Volts wouldn't be out of your budget while doing the conversion, I would highly recommend doing that too. You don't have to change motors unless you just want to, a 36 Volt motor will run fine on 48 Volts. -Scott H. |

Re: Upgrading to a controller
I did get with scotty and he made some great suggestions. I am going to upgrade and add two more 6v batteries to make it 48 volts. The only question I have is do I have to get a new charger or will my old charger work.

Re: Upgrading to a controller
Gornoman used his stock 36v charger and a 12v automotive charger for about a year initially on his upgraded Ezgo before going to a 48v charger. It is important to maintain a balanced pack so if you go this 2 charger route make sure you check voltages.

Re: Upgrading to a controller
Thanks ScottyB. I am running a stock motor will I still be able to run the C54 package or switch to a lower package as I don't think I can upgrade the motor to right now.

Re: Upgrading to a controller
personally Im a big fan of the v-glide for ease of use and cost of maintaince I'd just kick it up to 48volts by upgrading the soleinoid, and properly upgrade the charger as scottyb said its very important to keep you battery pack balanced

Re: Upgrading to a controller
My customers are having a lot better luck with a potentiometer than they ever did with the V-glides. The pot is an Ω signal sending unit. Nobody has burnt one up yet.... but when ever I ran 48v through a V-glide it eventually fried. Which made me sad to see my wife walking up the long drive with her fists clinched and one eye twitching ....
Hey, seriously, the C54 pkg is made to fit the cart as you build. You can run it at 400 or 500 amps output. You can run it on 36v now and 42 or 48 volts later. You can run any motor, from stock to aftermarket with it. This is one of the most versatile packages we have, and it includes the potentiometer throttle signal sending unit. I pre-program them before they ship, it can be used for Club Car or Ezgo. |

Re: Upgrading to a controller
Hey Scotty
In this scenario you discribed using 2 chargers, I have a question. If he does decide to use the 2 chargers for awhile, can both chargers be hooked up and charging at the same time, without removing any wires? |
