Do I just replace the diode? how can one tell if it's bad?

Yes, all you can do is replace the diode you cannot repair it. You need a volt/ohm meter to check it. The way a diode works is it will only pass voltage "one way" and not the other. Check for continuity on the diode and then flip the probes around and check it again. If you have continuity both ways the diode is bad.

OK all batteries are around 7.7 or 7.6 to 7.8 ish... on the diode 1 and 3 are conducting...
of course that's with the transformer still bolted to it... should I remove the nuts before I test? I'm afraid of that gigantic transformer.. it's bigger than the one in my 100 watt tubed Marshall JCM 800 guitar stack hehehehe.. And I know that tubed amps can kill ya'
Anyway ... should I remove the nuts before I test the diode??
