Default Club Car Lesteronics Charger - Smoking

I have a Lestronics 36v Charger for my 85 Club Car, the charger model number is 07854.

Anywho, I was sitting outside while my daughter was playing around earlier and I decided to charge up the Golf Cart (batteries are really bad and don't hold charge for more than a few hours) so we could go for a ride. I noticed when I turned it on that it wasn't humming as loud as it usually did, normally it would make a buzzing/humming sound that was somewhat loud. I let it go for about 15 20 minutes then I thought I smelt something, looked at the charger and there was smoke coming out of the case. I quickly unplugged it.

I opened the case and didn't notice anything visibly melted, so I turned it on again to see where the smoke was coming from. It appears that the smoke was coming from the transformer coil.

So does this mean it is fried? Is there any way to test it out to see if I can fix it?

There is a manual in the stickies but if smoke was coming from the transformer the charger is toast and a new charger is cheaper then the transformer.

Will any 36v charger do? Obviously I need the right connector, if they don't match can I just splice my old connector to the new charger?

Where can I get a charger for cheap? 85' Club Car

I have an older lestronic with the manual timer if you want to buy one cheap, but the shipping from 31089 might be more than you want. If you are interested. pm me. Gene Davis Tennille, Ga.
