Default Disconnecting Idiot Light and replace with LED Batt Lite

I am new to the forum and my name is Gene. I have a 2006 Club Cart and a 48v system in which I had to replace the 4 batteries because they wouldn’t accept a charge and were left unattended for 6 months because I live in Florida for 6 mos and Maryland for 6 mos. The person who replaced them put in the Crown batteries (old one were US). This person also pointed out the manner in which I should store the cart when leaving for 6 mos., mainly ensure water levels are proper and give the batteries a full charge, put switch to Tow and disconnect one of the battery cables.
My question now deals with the LED battery meters. I just found on the forum that my year cart does have spare wiring in the dash for connecting the battery pack to this meter. I wanted to utilize the same hole where the existing idiot light is located and do away with this light all together. I read somewhere though that the computer utilizes this light, and so I now am wondering if I can disconnect this light at all without something else occurring. I wouldn’t mind still installing the LED battery meter somewhere else, just wondering if I need to.
Your help will be appreciated and Thanks.

Welcome to the site! You can dissconnect that idiot light and use the same location to install a meter. I did the same exact thing, although you will have to make the hole slightly bigger. The idiot light does not need to be hooked up. There are lots of meters on the market. I hear great things about Scottyb's meters (carts unlimitted), a site sponsor. I have ordered items from him and he has never let me down. Check out his website as it is very informative. good luck with your new meter install!

Stevec3201,
So is the power that feeds the Idiot light the voltage from the battery pack?
Don't mean to highjack the thread, but I have the same question as NavyVet.

I have a 2002 DS IQ with that Idiot light and I just got another Blue digital volt meter (installed one on my 91 and love it) and if it is possible to use the power feeding the Idiot light, that would be a really easy and great location to place the volt meter. Plus I'm assuming that it would only be on when the key is on.

thanks,

No, I don't think the idiot light is pack voltage. It is connected to the obc and comes on when the computer says there is a problem.
Precedent carts have a two wire feed factory installed behind the dash for a meter. If you don't have a Precedent, you have to run your own wires from the pack...
You could run the wires through the key switch to have it only come on when the cart is on.

Thanks, jakesnake27.
That is how I wired up my 91, so I will do the same thing.

Thanks Steve
I will find the two under dash wires and hook up the meter. I would like to wire it through the key switch also.

Thanks Again
Gene

The OBC battery trouble light should be left intact as long as you are using the stock charger and OBC system. A better option for those who leave their cart sitting for 6 months at a time is to get a battery charger/maintainer to protect your battery pack from sulfation.

You can tie into the secondary side of the key switch so it will only be on when the key is on. I took the push-on terminal off of the secondary side of the switch and cut it off. I then crimped on another terminal with the secondary switch wire and the positive wire from the volt meter joined in it. Reconnect it to the terminal on the switch. That takes care of the positive side. Near the switch you will see a black wire with a push-on terminal connector on it. It is usually near a red striped wire which also has a terminal connector. These wire are not connected to anything and the black will supply the ground for your meter. Hope this helps
