Default Raised by shackles for 22" tires

1997 CC DS, 48 Volt series.

Well, I am trying to tweak this thing the poor man's way. The wife wants to save our money for work on the house. Since I don't have all my tools at this location in Florida, I have to muscle everything.

I picked up some shackles at Advance Auto locally and attempted to install them on the DS. They have three holes for optional heights, but I could only get the leaf spring down to the second level. Would have liked to get it down to the last hole for more clearance of my new tires.

I picked up some offset 8" wheels for a decent price and bought some 22x11x8 tires that were made for ATV's. They are real knobby and round. I have them on but the documented suggested tire pressure made them look almost flat, so I pushed the tire pressure to about 12lbs. They seemed to be kind of rolling when I went around corners, so the additional air seemed to help a bit. They are definitely LOUD. Since I have no windows to isolate the tire sound from the passengers, the thing sounds like a truck. I believe the body might be rubbing on the inside when I make sharp turns with both my wife and myself in the cart. I can't see any other indications of friction. Maybe the cart is swaying and the inner fender well rubbing the tires? I put some "SS" chrome hubcaps on the cart and it is starting to look much better. I still need to polish and wax the paint to give it a shine. It's got quite a few scratches and chips in the paint too, so I need to find some touch up paint for the two tone blue over silver.

Caution on plastic wheel covers. I cracked one of them on the rear offset wheels. I only used my hand to force the new cover on the wheel, and yet it cracked. They do look good though, and well worth the savings. Picked up four for about $42 on Amazon.

Note: I haven't used the GPS to check the speed yet, but it does seem like the cart is going a bit faster with the larger tire. It may just be the sound making it seem faster, so I won't know for sure until I can check it with the GPS. The tires are softer and the cart seems to sway a bit. Could be the shackles or the tires or a combination of the two. And yes, I would rather have purchased regular street tires, but the price was too high in comparison at this stage. We are looking at buying another cart shortly and can always go back and put more money into this one later.

To be honest with you, the cart doesn't even look raised and the big tires don't appear anywhere near as big as I thought they would. They do stick out from the fender a bit.

It's raining today, so I can't post any photos yet. Not that there is that much interesting to see compared to what some of you guys have. I won't be able to use this cart on the golf courses, now that I have the ATV tires on it. Not allowed. Funny how they would rather have you drive on their grass with street tires than turf tires. It doesn't matter, because my wife uses it to go to the pool every morning, and we use it to grocery shop. All of our driving is on asphalt cart trails or on the neighborhood streets.

If you are interested in seeing the tires, shackles installed or the wheel covers, I will post some photos when the sun comes back out. I doubt it will be different than much else that has already been posted on this site.

Question on your shackles MDLNB...

Most (all) shackles on CC's that I've seen, have bends in them for proper leaf spring alignment...
Do your Advanced Auto shackles have the bend in them? (that might be the reason you can't get them in the last hole!)

If you remove your shocks you should be able to put them in the last hole.
You may have to raise your lower shock mounting brackets or lower your upper brackets.

Nope, these are made for cars. But, the original are straight also. I may be mistaken but I don't think that is the problem. But, thanks for the input.

You make a good point to consider. I probably should have thought about the shocks. I am going to run it the way it is for now. I kind of like the way it looks, and to be honest with you, I think any rubbing might be on the inside of the tires by way of the body swaying when making a turn. Of course, I didn't notice it without my wife in it. Actually, she is the one that said she thought it rubbed. I never heard it and can't see any spot on the bottom or outside of the tire.

Still raining on and off today, and cloudy. Had some tornado warnings in nearby counties. I will have to wait on the photos. Maybe tomorrow.

The shackles that I took off are straight. I'll try to take a photo of them today, if the sun decides to come out. My little cheap phone camera needs some light to take a pic that you might be able to see enough to make out anything.

These pics are from a cheap cell phone, early morning, with low light. Maybe you can make out the changes.

As you can see from the condition of the car, it has a lot of paint scratches and chips that need to be repaired. Like many of you, I have to get my expenditures approved thru the finance dept. But, she seems to be coming around slowly. She enjoyed the remarks and the ride resulting from the new tires, at her morning water aerobics class.

I really don't like the look of those giant shackles on the back, but will live with it for now. I might be able to get the same lift by investing in HD springs. I do like the look of the fat tires.

Notice also, the new "SS" wheel covers on the standard 8" steel wheels. One of them cracked when I was attempting to force it on the rear wheel. And I was only using my hands too. Still, I kind of like the look. Not bad for the price. Dealer wanted $22 each, and Amazon had them for about $42 for the complete set of four.
