My $300 Upgrade
Sold my 2002 DS 36v resistor cart & bought this 1997 48v with a back seat. I'm going to be able to lift it now & use it as the family campground cruiser. Thanks to all the generous folks around here I found out the resistor cart wouldn't do what I wanted it to do without spending a ton of money so I went 48v plus got the back seat I was going to buy anyway! Plus the batteries are only a year old! So before I lift it I need to figure out what to do about the sagging top, maybe make a brace out of some steel? I'm looking for ideas, I'm sure a lot of these tops sag & I can't be the first person to face this dilemma. Next thing is figuring out if I want to replace the rear springs with HD ones or just do a helper spring? The drivers side sage an inch lower than the passenger so I'm thinking I should just replace the springs? Finally I'll need to make sure its running 100% before i start thinking about a new controller, I GPS'd it at a whopping 12 mph with myself, my wife & two toddlers. It's 35 degrees here today & the pack was registering a little over 51 volts when charged, it ran down pretty quick though which I'm hoping is due to the cold? I didn't let it rest 12 hours though when I tested the voltage.
So I know, a thread is useless without pics so here you go... |

Re: My $300 Upgrade
Fishwater if you are wanting a comfort ride I would not choose the HD springs, I installed them on my cart and they are way to stiff.

Re: My $300 Upgrade
First the top. You can make a precedent top fit. I got mine for free just by asking at a mom/pop cart shop. It was a take off.
Second the springs. You can take a leaf or two out to soften the ride, So I have heard. I will be finding out soon as I have the HD springs in a box ready to go on my cart. We have almost the same cart as you know. Mines a series, no run/tow switch. |

Re: My $300 Upgrade
Yep, your cart inspired me to start looking, mine is also a series cart. I'll keep my eyes open for a roof, Iffigured they'd swap over easy enough but for now I want to figure out how to brace it. I doubt I have your luck of cheap carts & free tops :-)
I would try a helper spring but I'm worried these rear springs are shot. They aren't bent but I'd hate to buy the helpers & find out I still need to replace the springs anyway. |

Re: My $300 Upgrade
Tested my battery pack this morning after sitting overnight from being charged. It read 50.9v which according to the state of charge sticky is a full charge

Re: My $300 Upgrade
What are the chances, that's about 2.5 hours from me, I drove right past it to pick this cart up, had I only known! Not sure when I can get down that way again, hmmmmm.

Re: My $300 Upgrade
I would be careful with not using the HD rear springs, since you are going to use this cart as a 4 seat family ride
