It's really your call.

If it is infact totaly without a load of any kind, the current it uses will be so miniscule that you will never see a drain on the batteries.

Example, A clock, LED battery gauge, electronic speedometer or GPS that stays connected will have a tiny amount of current draw on the batteries for the Memory in the device. Even those devices would take Months to drain the batteries. You will probably be charging the batteries more often than that.

If you really want to know for sure what kind of draw is on the system, put an ammeter in line with the output. Make sure it is a microamp meter.

hey Rusty sorry all the questions but you said to hook up a meter on the output do you mean in line on the line side or the load side. and will a digital multimeter work and what would be a minimal amp draw i should be looking for?

No Problem........
uh.... It would be the opposite side of the Battery side. The side that feeds the 12 volt items. Or the 12 volt output side. Sorry, the line side means nothing to me.

The only digital multimeter will be one that reads DC Current in Milliamps.

you could always put a meter on the batteries the regulator is connected to. flip the on switch and see how much drain is happening.
