Cable upgrade with OBC

For those of you making your own 2ga cables, here is how I took care of the OBC issue. I used a brass bolt through the obc. You can use a stud, but bolts are easier to come by. The bolt is either 3/8" or 7/16", I can't remember which. Just make sure you use the largest one that will easily slide in. I used brass due to the conductivity properties as compared to mild or stainless steel. Copper would be much better, but I could not locate a copper bolt or stud.

As you can see by the images, I place the cable lug on the bolt and then tightened it down with a brass nut. I then placed a rubber back metal washer on the bolt and slid it through the obc. I then put anther rubber backed washer on the bolt from the opposite side, followed by a finger tightened brass nut. Place the lug on the bolt and tighten another nut down on it. Make sure to hold the finger tightened nut with a wrench while tightening the outer nut so you do not damage the obc.

This is for those of you who are inclined to do things yourself or have a skinny wallet like me. All others should consider ScottyB's cables. They come with an obc through stud. I am sure they are a great product. I have his battery meter and it rocks.

Do You happen to remember the length of the bolt you used?

It was 2" or 2 1/2". It would depend on the thickness of the nuts, washers and lugs.

I just left the original cable in and also ran the bigger cable around it, works fine so far.

So, do you just hook up both neg. cables ?

Im upgrading the motor, solenoid, controller and f&r switch along with the cables, so its not leaving original. do I have to the bolt through thing?

. . . the OBC measures the current flow being depleted from the battery pack via the negative cable passing "thru" the hole in the OBC . . . if it were me, I would use the bolt/threaded rod method if cable is too large to fit thru the OBC . . . just my $.02 . . .
