1999 Club Car slow to start or climb hills

Hi all,

I have a 1999 Club Car that has new batteries in it. When I hit the gas to get it going it is very slow until it gets going. The cart is fine once it gets going on a flat road, however, it is very slow when climbing a hill.

If I was to liken it to driving a car I would say it's like driving a standard in second gear all the time. Very slow to get going, but once you're at speed it's fine until you hit a hill and can't downshift.

I read another thread that seemed similar, however, I wanted to check on my particular problem before trying the solution they provided.

The solution was:
You've got two options, replace that solenoid or bypass it. It's fine to bypass it as the new cars, 2001 Regen 2 and all IQs.... don't have it. unhook the battery pack first of all, make sure you flip it into TOW first.... Then remove the solenoid, you've got two white wires on it. One from controller to solenoid, one from solenoid to A2 on motor.... discard wire from solenoid to motor, and take the other white wire and hook to A2 on motor.... You'll end up with a wire running directly from the controller to the motor, therefore, taking the solenoid completely out of the circuit. the two small wires on the solenoid as simply activation wires to make it click. Cut them with a pair of wire cutters, tape them up, and let them hang free of touching anything. Problem solved.. It'll run probably better than it ever has.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Last year it was fine, but then started with this problem. I replaced the batteries this year (they were due anyway), but even with the new batteries the problem still persists.

Does anybody have any insight into this?

Load test each battery.
Also, fully charge the pack, let it sit for 12 hrs then take the readings of each batt.
Do you know how old they are?
It sounds like a typical battery problem...

The batteries are brand new.... less than a week old.
The solenoid problem sounds plausible since I only hear one click when I press the accelerator.

Ok, sorry I missed that in the first post. Make sure you break them in properly to get them to their full potential.
Have you tried bypassing the solenoid?

Sounds to me like your throttle is not getting all the way up. Not knowing what type of system you have it is hard to tell exactly. For example: if you have a pie shaped wiper system. It sounds like you are not getting to the last connector to give all the power, amps that the system can give you. It would be like holding the the go pedal just halfway down. It will get you going but slowly. Won't climb hills well, if at all. But on flat ground you will get up to speed eventually. Could be your go pedal linkage needs to be adjusted.

It is a pie shaped wiper system. If I take the cover off is there a way to clean or adjust it? I will be trying this tonight and hope that it works. If not I'll have to try the solenoid solution above. Thanks

I have my doubts about it being the solenoid. If it was the solenoid it wouldn't move at all. Also check that all the wires are tight, not corroded, or burnt on the wiper. If it is not making it to the last connector, there is adjustments that can be made. Look at the linkage, you will see them.

Ungortunately it doesn't seem to have worked. I took the cover off, cleaned the contacts and tightened it up. Same result. Slow up hills and slow to get going from a stop. It really feels like a lower gear isn't there. It has plenty of life and I can go around the park for days.
