Help me build a SICK cart!
Ok heres the deal.
I was heavy into drag racing. (topsportsmen) I sold my car....blah blah... We went camping with some friends and I buy a beach house for my wife while I am there. So there goes my race car for a year or two. The deal I made was I buy the beach house.... but I can build one of these cool carts I see riding around. SHE AGREED!!! So I have been reading around for about a month now and can across your active forum and thought it would be cool to get advise from you all and keep a thread going and updated with photos of my build. I am used to some nice toys, So I want to build a REALLY nice cart. There are about 6000 carts in a closed gate place I am at. Some of these carts are really nice, Painted lifted and all that.... I want the nicest one. They have cart races...pulls and shows. My Vision so far. 96 Club Car 48/ volt ELETRIC The cart will be lifted. (6-8 inch) Tires to be chosen later. I am thinking something like super swampers chrome or billet rims. Front end full indpendant ( long reach a-arm kit ) full indapendant rear axle. I hope to buy a wrecked 4 wheeler and convert (fab) the rear suspension into the cart. I am really thinking of using the front end also. I am thinking I can turn the old carts rear axle cut down and mount this front to back in the cart and run the two front and rear axles as in 4 wheel drive. Drive line. I plan to run the drive line threw a gear box of some sort. I would like this to be a high/low. Maybe off of a 4-wheeler or tractor?? Maybe has to be fabed? ( I own a large repair shop with welders and painters, I am also partners in a machine, weld shop. So some of these things will not be hard to get done. ) Motor.... I want the badest I can get! So far this is the one I am looking at. http://hiperformancegolfcars.com/content/view/1/2/ Paint is going to be chosen later. All I know so far is Sherwin Williams agreed to use the house of colors on it and paint it for free. ( love favors) The dash and trim....etc. Would like to stick with Stanless and carbon fiber. Lights- Has to have all lights and turn signals, rear brake lights. I will keep the front head lights but add to them. I am thinking LED all the way around? I am thinking a full tubed roll cage? This is so I can fab a removable custom hard top for it. ( Hot at the beach ) Ofcourse this cart will have all the cool little add ons, Big radio system, molded in speakers,I will try for a build in molded in rear under the seat cooler. Has to have a inverter 110ac. Under seat tray, A small lock box.... ETC. I would love to hear some ideas for this. Or if one of you have done some of these mods allready.... can you share what you did with me. Including any helpfull links of trusted places out there where I should buy from. I cant wait to start this. I hope this will start in 4 weeks. I would like to start buying this week. Look forward to your thoughts Thanks all Last edited by Beach Boy; 09-07-2008 at 06:43 PM.. Re: Help me build a SICK cart!
Hey beachboy, welcome to the forum. Check out what some of our members were able to do with their carts with humble beginnings and limited funds...
http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/membe...=poorboy+carts For your build I suggest you may want to buy a brand new Razor and put $10,000 worth of mods into it. |

Re: Help me build a SICK cart!
Just my two cents here, If you want a cart that is built right then you will either have to build it yourself or find one that a bgw member or equivelant has built and decided to sell. I prefer to find a late 80's to late 90's cart that has a decent body but needs complete electrical/batteries for less than 600. (sometimes impossible, lately people are wanting 1000+ for junk that needs batteries) Totally gut the existing electrical and most likely corroded battery tray. Fab a tray to hold 8 group 24 batteries, 8x6 volt(4 or 8x8volt depending on how extreme you want. Get an allsports long travel lift from our sponsor. While cart is stripped take Eagle one etching mag cleaner and steel wool to frame and make her shine. Get with EMP and explain what you want and they can build you a motor to suit your needs(if you want to do it right don't opt for the cheapest motor, spend a little dough and have him build something suitable for higher voltages, you might not want to run more than 48 now but you will guaranteed.) Buy you a 5k-0 ohms ,48-72volt, 700amp controller, I use logisystems and have had excellent luck. Get a good solenoid with silver contacts rated to hold 72 volts continously and break 1000+ amps for safety reasons(czonka or kilovac) , This will suffice for any upgrade in the future and assure the safety of your family. You will need a potentiometer of some sort, I use a 5k-0ohm curtis pb-6, many use the mcor conversion kit which I hear is an easier install and possibly more troublefree unit, though I can't vouch for this having never used one myself. You will have a little fab work, including plate for controller and solenoid if cart was originally a resistor or solenoid cart. I come up from rear of new battery tray to existing cross bar
behind seat mounts with two 1/2" by 1/8" flat bar with 1/8" plate mounted which doubles as tray hanger supports. You will also need a heavy-duty forward and reverse switch, again look at sponsor's website, to handle the ampacity. I personally do away with all factory wiring and have a #12 wire going from battery+ through my key switch, microswitch on accelerator, microswitch on f/r switch then to my activation coils of solenoid, and from my battery- directly to opposite post. For your power cables I would recommend getting a good quality #2 welding cable and good lugs and make your own cables and save yourself a few headaches down the road. If you want to have a speed demon the ge d380 motor is an excellent choice, it runs my cart 32+@48 with 27 inch very aggressive swamp lite tires will pick the tires off the ground from a dead stop on a full charge, however this motor does not like prolonged low speeds and drains your battery pack fairly quick. An alternative would be running a "beast " or similar low rpm high torque motor at 64 volts, these motors are not quite the amp hogs, don't mind the slower speeds, and with the higher voltage you get a nice top end to boot, disc brakes are recommended and available to stop you now that you have more than doubled the speed cart was designed to run. Then of course you have to charge the 64 volts... good luck, prepare to be hooked, most importantly consider who will be driving this cart and their safety,!!! Here is my wheelie popping cart in the current " paint can wait stage", Although it appears that it would be very unstable it is actually quite smooth and stable, with an excellent turning radius.
