Default 96 club car wont charge

Hello again. I'm trying to diagnose my charging problem. I purchased a used cart several weeks ago. It had no batteries and the charger was obviously opened due to having only 3 screws. I put 6 brand new 8v batts and she ran fine. It showed 48v. I plugged the charger in and it quietly hummed but no amps indicated. I didnt know if it charged.

I now have 45.8v, 7.7 on each, so I know its not charging. I bypassed the obc by jumping the large splice connectors on my charger but still no amps and the voltage across 1 and 6 still read the same, 45.8.

I just did a reset on the obc with no change in results.

I've sent an email to the neighborhood to see if someone has a similar car I may use to help eliminate some of the variables. No response yet.

The only obvious modification to the cart is the key switch must be altered to disable it. I've checked to see if it breaks continuity and it does. It also has 48 v going into it.

The batteries were removed for several years I believe.

Its a non regen cart.

I dont know what to check next.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Shemp

Mine had a similar issue many years ago - in my case it was the little black relay in the charger, but it could also be the diode pack (bridge) I think. Other (smarter) people on this site may know for sure.

. . . friend's charger had similar problem recently . . turned out to be a bad circuit breaker in charger . . bypassed the circuit breaker and charger functioned properly . . . worth a try . . .

I have the power drive model 17930.

I checked continuity on the circuit breaker and fuse. All ok

I also bypassed the black relay, no charge.

It does hum quietly.

If your charger is "humming" then the transformer is powered up and s/b OK. If you bypassed the relay and still no charge, and checked continuity in the breaker and fuse; then I think the only thing remaining is the rectifier circuit (AKA diode array) which must not be converting the transformer's AC to DC. Therefore no amperage on the DC amp meter and no charge. BTW, I have the exact same charger (mine is a 1996 48v Regen) - with the round plug. Powerdrive, but not Powerdrive II.

I just got word from a neighbor who has one. I'll first try his charger in my cart and see. I hope the fact that the key isnt working wont affect anything. If the key is on, will a cart charge?

OK. Charger is working. Key was wired wrong. Hot was on the wrong terminal. Who knows why??

Now, the problem still remains. Wont charge. Still have 46 volts. We put a negative directly to the controller to bypass computer which also had no effect.

My neighbor lent me his Maintenance and Service manual for 95 and 96 CC's.

By jumping the relay in the charger, is that supposed to take the obc out of the loop? I did a continuity on the fuse on the charger receptacle and it checked ok.
