Default Sanding Question

I'm planning on starting to repaint my 99 Club Car tomorrow. The body is actually in great shape but the paints kinda faded on the sides so that itself yielded to the new paint job. I was wondering what grit would you start out with..I have on hand 220, 400 and 1000 grit all wet/dry but can always go get something else. Once the clears sanded, I won't have to do any body work so this is just a sanding in prep for painting. I'm following Masters outline in the stickie but am still unsure out the first sanding. thanks guys.

600 grit is likely your best bet. Are you doing bc/cc?

I ended up starting with 220 grit because I had some paint coming up off the back fender so I had to sand it smooth. Hope I didn't start out with too aggressive paper but I did it because there was a defect in the mold or something. The paint looked like it was chipping and when I sanded it smooth there was no bondo and it was the original color. I am going to a higher grit after this. Do you think I started too aggressive? Its starting to dry and I can see the sand marks in it but cant feel any of them. Please help, or reassure I'm doing this right. I don't want to screw this up!

I bet you could have purchased a new body for nearly the same cost of a professional paint job and save a lot of work.

Work yes! The cheapest body I've found was $400 plus delivery fees. I spent way less then that in paint. All I have is time right now unfortunately and it gives me and the wifey something to do together. Do you know where I can find a cheaper body then that because I made need one if I completely screw this one up.

sand the ruff spots with the 220, you don't need to sand the nice smooth spots with the 220, sand the whole cart with the 400, all you want to do is take the shine off so the paint will stick

If you are doing it yourself then you can't beat the price. $400 sounds about right for a new body.

I have seen some good paint jobs and some bad ones so I guess it depends on what your abilities are and how you want it to look in the end.

I'm still in the primer stage. I'm taking a break because my old butt cant stay bent over that long. I took the advise and resanded with 600 grit and it turned out to be a great base so far. I can tell my painting skills are a little lacking but its not like its a car. I will post some pics up tonight. The before is down below....I took pics of the stripping down and now somewhat primered...stay tuned for Sesame Street paint job..I only wish it was paint my numbers Nothing a little more sanding cant fix though!

You're fine with 220 as long as you final sanded it with 600. You have to remember sand scratches won't show with primer because there is no shine. 400 may be a little too aggressive depending on what you are using for paint. Have fun!
