4 Amp vs 20 Amp Chargers
Looks like I will need to replace my old Lestronic II 36v charger. The old one is a 20 Amp, like most cart chargers. I see some new 4 Amp models out there, the cost is significantly less even with all the safety features, ect. What would I sacrifice going to a lower amp unit?
Charging time? Anything else? |

Re: 4 Amp vs 20 Amp Chargers
The 4 amp charger will take 5X longer to charge your batteries. Unless the transformer is shot in your Lestronic, it might make sense to repair it. It's a good one, don,t give up on it. - RAY

Re: 4 Amp vs 20 Amp Chargers
Big sticks right, I would just get a repair kit for your charger and fix it. A 4 amp charger will take 5x longer... 20/4=5

Pretty sure it is the transformer.
Everything else checks out. I hear they cost more than they're worth |

Re: 4 Amp vs 20 Amp Chargers
Post a link. I've never seen or heard of a 4 amp 36v charger for a golf cart.I'd be more concerned with it's maximum charge voltage then the amp output also. While a low amp output will make for much longer charger times, a low max voltage will never fully charge a golf cart battery.

Proper/high enough/long enough finishing voltage would also be a concern of mine for the 4 A. charger. Not economical to repair the Lester if the transformer is bad. Scottyb sells a DPI charger that has been getting very good comments here. It is under $300 (I think) - RAY
PS - Here's a link for the 48 volt model. http://www.cartsunlimited.net/48v_Battery_Charger.html Last edited by bigstik40; 06-11-2013 at 08:04 AM.. Reason: add link |

Re: 4 Amp vs 20 Amp Chargers
The battery manufactures suggest a charger that can put out 10% min. of the battery amp hour rating. (Average 200 AH) This is the charge required for the initial bulk charge rate. Anything less will not be strong enough to undo normal separation. Over time the result will be significant stratification and loss of performance.
Do not use a single phase low amp charger without a proper golf car charge. |

Re: 4 Amp vs 20 Amp Chargers
The absorption voltage at 43.2 volts is low. The golf car chargers are usually in the range of 45 volts when they shut off.
