09' Precedent maiden voyage=disaster
Picked up my 09' Precedent today. It was ready a day early. Fitted with lights(more on that later), lift, 14 inch wheels, 23inch tires - I think that's the combination....with 6x8v setup. Got it home and actually left on the trailer while I mowed the yard. It sure looked good on that trailer :)...any ways later this evening, I unloaded....and took my first trip around the long block. Not bad at all. I clocked on my GPS a earth shattering 17mph unless I had the tail wind...then it was 18mph :)
For what ever reason, I checked the voltage with my volt meter. Now I could have sworn it said 38 volts. I determined the 2 end points of the series and measured there. I thought that was low for a 48v system but didn't think too much of it cause all seemed fine. Any ways - waiting for the wife to get home to take the "real" maiden voyage. Later this evening, right before dusk, we took off in the hood..About 3/4's of a mile down the road I fired up the lights...nice...about 1/4 mile later...I got the hesitate, hesitate, hesitate trying to get going...I was thinking the battery was lower than I had hoped...So I killed the lights...well we were slowing to a crawl before I pulled off the side of the road...wiped the tears(was really sweat)...and we began the walk of shame...Picked up the truck w/trailer...surprisingly we had enough juice to get it on the trailer...and brought her home. Drove her off the trailer and around the driveway. Same hesitation but seemed to have pulled in some "reserve" but not much more than a crawl. The lights(it was dark by now) were still bright. I pulled into the garage..she has her own spot...I checked the voltage again...this time it said 44v. I scratched my head on that one wondering what I did the first time. I spot checked a couple of the batteries and they were at 7.1v apiece. Any ways - I plugged her in and began the charge. I'll go check on her shortly and tell her good night. In the back of my head, I am wondering how those lights were even working. No voltage reduce but appears to be tapping into the the batteries some how but I wouldn't think it was 48v. That doesn't seem right would it be? I took a picture that I will post later once I get it off my phone. Can't wait til tomorrow with a full charge. Did notice that light that I read was suppose to come on when the battery gets around 25% didn't come on. My next purchase will be some sort of meter to install. Not sure if I won't digital or analog. Gotta figure out how to run them wires to the dash too. Just hadn't dug into deep yet. I will be interested in comments and I told ya so somewhere in the middle of it. :) --Mickey |

7 volts in a batt is one dead batt! How old are your batteries?
The lights really should be connected with a 48-12 reducer to bring down the pack evenly. I would get a scottyb digital volt meter. They are quality and easy to wire up... |

Did you charge it after you first got it home? If not, batteries were probably drained and or weak before you took off for either of the maiden voyages. Before taking off again after the charge, check the voltage on each battery and make sure each one is up to par.

I did find the blue lead to the lights. I read something earlier that eluded that they are running off of 16v which would reduce life of the bulb and basically draw more voltage than needed. I am going to order a reducer soon and move that blue to the reducer - wondering about the ground. Do I need to find it and move it too? or is ground considered ground? Will be ordering me a scottyB...digital or analog - I am thinking the wife needs analog to be meaningful. Thanks for the comments. --Mickey |

For what it is worth - here is the picture of my batteries. Blue wire on bottom left runs to lights. Hope the attachment works.

I suppose I have to drill holes in the dash? As long as I don't have have to drill into a bottom of a boat, I should be ok:). Where can I read about when to take two steps back, punt and run home when I see certain voltages? Thanks Steve. --Mickey |

check out Scottys web page. he is a site sponser has very good battery maintenance information and he carries a good digital meter that is very easy to hook up the wires are already behind the dash. you can cut the hole with a razor knife. just flip your run tow switch to tow before you work on your electrical system and or unhook your batteries |

Re: 09' Precedent maiden voyage=disaster
About to order me one now...
Question - from the pic I included above of my batteries - can someone tell what size cables those are? Thanks. --Mickey |
