How did your ProTec Charger die?
I purchased a Protec 36V ebay special about 2 years ago. Like many others mine failed about 6 months in. In my case, the fan controller quit working and it would thermal out within a few minutes. I knew it was the fan controller because the fans stopped changing speeds as the unit heated up.
Now the reason I went with an el cheapo was I knew a 48v charger was in my future. I figure it would last at least long enough to get me to that point and I definitely didn't want to pay for another 36V charger. So I cracked open the charger and jumped an external power supply to the fans. Bam! they all came on at full speed and the charger was able to complete a charge cycle no problem.
The internal fans run at 24vdc and I happen to have had the correct power supply laying around. Once I confirmed it was a fix, I soldered a 6' 16g lamp cord to the terminals on one of the fans, routed it out of the case and put it all back together. I now simply plug the fan p/s and the power cord to the charger into a switchable power strip. I have been using this charger like this for close to 2 years now.
