Default Precedent Stereo

I have posted a thread like this before but still unsure how I want to add a stereo to my cart. My biggest concern about adding a stereo is that I dont want any rattling because I do a good bit of off road riding. So where is the best place to add speakers that will not rattle, is it the roof or possibly the dash or elsewhere. the only thing about having speakers on the dash is I like my compartments there to store things and with speakers and stereo there i wouldnt have any room. I could always go with smaller boat tower speakers and just play music from phone through the amp aux. Just trying to get some ideas.

Polk 6.5" shallow mount marine speakers will fit facing forward on either side of the F/R switch. Might take minor cutting in the battery bay to clear the magnets, but it's doable. How do i know? I did it. They don't rattle and sound really good there. You can still use whatever device/amp you want to play through them. I kept my dash area open and just mounted a single din kenwood in there using a generic under dash mounting box. I also now have a subwoofer tube mounted between the seatbacks. Everything fits and sounds awesome. I think the battery bay adds some natural baffling and helps the speakers sound even better.

By the way, my Kenwood marine radio has been hauled down the road twice in pouring rain for 3 hours and failed to come on afterwards. But once it dried out, it works great. The speakers have been through rain many times and multiple washes and still work perfectly. I am careful around the speakers with water but they have certainly been wet. I didn't get a marine sub, so I am very careful to keep that from getting wet.

Here are my speakers:

These are the small dremmel cuts I had to make for the magnets:

This is where my radio is mounted:

And here's the sub:

That looks great! I may go with this setup. Im just not sure where or if I would add and actual cd player face plate because my dash isnt open like that, its one that has the lockable compartments. I could just mount an amp in the rear cage box deal right behind the seat to enhance sound quality and be able to play music from phone without the stereo face plate. How do the two polk speakers sound without the sub or amp?

what size sub did you install? how did you mount it, did you have to modify anything to get it to fit there? I really like the subwoofer tube idea.

The speakers feed off the head unit which has an integrated amp. The sub is a powered version so the amp is built in - Bazooka 8" tube. Only has 50w amp but I can't imagine more on a cart after hearing it. My son has a friend with a several hundred watt amp and a homemade 12" box woofer built onto his cart and this one sounds as good or better and takes up much less space and is more difficult to steal. If you have a dash enclosure, you'd have to mount a head unit behind it and then you'd have to open it up everytime you need to adjust something. That is part of the reason I never put one on my cart. Or you could go with an amp, speakers and something to plug mp3 player into that feeds the amp. 99% of our listening is from an iphone plugged into the head unit using an ipod cord or aux cord.

As for how the speakers sound with no sub, to me they sounded great. I have turned more than one head that didn't believe the sound was coming from just the 2 speakers - but they are powered by the integrated head unit amp. They have pretty good bass by themselves and I probably would have never added the sub for me - my son wanted it. Once we added the sub, we configured the pass filters on the head unit to send most of the bass to the sub which frees the speakers up for more mid and high range frequencies - so it all compliments each other. That may be a good argument for a head unit, if you get one that is very tuneable. Without that, you'd have a harder time doing anything but just throwing the same signals to all of the speakers. I guess there are other technical ways of limiting what goes where, but a head unit makes it easy.

All I did to install the sub was remove the rear seat back, run my wiring, plugged it in, strapped it down to one of the rear seat support bars using the straps supplied with the sub, and put the seatback back on. If you don't have a rear seat, you'd just have to find something else to strap it to back there.

I make a custom fit stereo system for the precedent that is molded to fit in the dash that looks factory. It includes a sub with enclosure and a high power amp running the dash speakers and sub.

I know you said you want to keep your dash space so this may not work for you but wanted to present you with another option. If you want to take a look at it see my website in my signature and go to products page. If you have any questions or interest let me know.
