Default 36v to 48v question

I recently purchased a 1990 club car ds. it is a single solenoid, v glide resistor cart. The batteries are all coded 2006. The cart sat for 3 years outside. After removing, cleaning and charging the old batteries the cart runs and drives fine. However it is a little slow and has almost no range. I do realize I need batteries and have been thinking of going with 6-8v batteries instead of the 6-6v that it came with. The question is what else do I need to do other than replace the solenoid with a 48v?

48v charger. You don't necessarily need to change the solenoid now. Wait til it gives out. There are a lot of pros and cons about doing the 6v to 8v change. I did it on a 91 CC the same as yours and have enjoyed it for 6 years trouble free. All I did was install 6 - 8v batteries and get a 48v V pronged charger. I would not suggest you go at half speed for very long as you will burn out the resistors. I am a lead foot so I am going wide open most of the time. I am also on fairly flat terrain.

Perfect!!! That's what I thought. I didn't get a charger with the cart si in need to invest in that anyway. Any Suggestions?

Unless you are also planning getting an OBC I wouldn't get a 48v PowerDrive charger and you would need to change charger port to match it. I don't know what other brand of Carts use. I purchased a lestronic (sp) 48v that had a V prong charge end on it. Only thing I didn't like was that it was a timer charger. Had I known in advance I would of tried for an automatic one. But then it was only $75! Look around and see what is availiable in your area.

I coverted too 48 volts on my 1990 cc and instead of buying a 48v charger I got a 12v auto shut off charger that has deep cycle setting on it and it only cost 35$ since it was a refurbished charger at a local battery shop.... But ya since yours didnt come with a charger that worked out perfect for you.. Are you planning on lifting this cart?

'88 sparky, same as yours. Switched to 48V in 2006. Solenoid still stock. Like CartTrader said, wait til it goes out. Check with ScottyB (site sponsor) and see if he has a dual 36/48 charger. that way it will do both and you won't need the 12V charger (since you're buying one, anyway). There is a dual voltage solenoid as well, I've seen. Again, ScottyB would know. Have fun. Good carting.

Ok so you guys are saying just by switching out the batteries to 8v the cart will work like a 48v cart and my 36v motor is going to be faster? I thought I have to invest like $600 In parts to convert my 94 ds to 48v.

Since you're gonna save all that money, go ahead and buy a proper solenoid. Why wait around for a failure, or worse yet, the contacts welding together and taking you for a possible wild ride. I'm all for being frugal, but I also like to travel worry-free. My .02

Well yes it will...Now that being said, you also run the risk of failure of parts! I just wanted to say that so you know there are risks in doing so. Gornoman had a very good point!! By the way my cart does just under 20MPH just by changing batteries and a lot more torque with stock tires. There are pros and cons of doing this conversion.

BIG QUESTION what is your expectations of converting to 48v speed? torque? lift and wheels? if you going just bone stock and 48v fine but yes might as well order the solenoid and run stock till it comes in rather than running it till it fails and then waitind 5 days on a new one shipping.
