Default Question about rear shocks on DS

Ok so I'm taking off my leaf springs in preparation to install my Jakes 6" a-arm lift. I noticed after I got my rear leaf spring out the shocks can be pulled up and down without them bouncing back. I was always under impression a shock works like a spring it stretches down and pulls up. These guys you pull on it and it goes down and stays down until you manually push it back up. Is this normal or are my shocks shot??

Just the opposite, shocks push out rather than pull in... I've never have seen a new shock for a golf cart and mine are doing same as yours but I'm sure mine are factory shocks

Depends...is there resistance when you push and pull on them. BUT NO shocks don't necessarily pull back up they just dampen the spring action.

Yeah there is some resessistence pushing or pulling on them but like I said there is no kind of spring action it doesn't push or pull on its own. You move it up and down and it stays in that spot where you stop moving it. I guess perhaps that's what the leaf spring does.

Shocks keep the springs/tires from bouncing continuously, not just when you drive over bumps, keeping the tire in constant contact with the driving surface. They are not springs, themselves, just dampeners, as CartTrader stated.

I would say that they are shot , my old ones were like that . the new ones I put in my ds have some resistance to them, you push them up they come back down.

here is my thread with pics and info on the shocks I replaced with

You should change your shocks. There are different shocks you can get that can be adjusted to compress easily and retract at a slower rate and visa versa, but these are set up for drag racing where you want the weight of the body to be over the rear axle longer after take off. Stock golf carts, not so much. Lol! They should compress and retract at the same rate.

So I should order a set of $30 shocks from eBay or do I have to spend top dollar on these little bastards?
Is it hard to swap them out later on compared to now while my springs are off. I have it all apart to put on lift kit this weekend. I really dont want to wait for the shocks to come in before I put it all together if I have to order them.

If there is some resistance they are still good. They aren't gas shocks that push back out. All they do is dampen the the springs to keep from constant bouncing and keep tires in contact with the ground.

If your tires aren't cupped (irregular wear pattern) then your shocks are probably ok. If you want new looking, then paint them.
