How big of generator needed to charger
Thinking longer term charging needs when RVing. We have been considering a buying an RV of course with a generator. What I don't know is how many amps/generator watts are needed to charge my cart. Quit frankly, I am not buying a big honking RV so I suspect the on-board generators may not be enough which is why I ask more so then anything.
Thanks in advance. |

Re: How big of generator needed to charger
I don't think you need to worry about the charging, as long as the gen runs the rv, then it will handle the cart charger, the size of the rv gen will be based on the size of the rv you are buying and what you want it to run, either way, the cart charger is not going to pose a problem.

also, if the rv came factory with a gen, then it will be sized correctly

Re: How big of generator needed to charger
You have a charger that puts out 20 amps @ 50 volts (both high) so that is 1000 watts divide that by 120 volts and you need 8.333 amp charger you could just about to do that with a hand crank generator.

Re: How big of generator needed to charger
Some battery chargers do not like the kind of electricity generators produce. I have been told that the wave forms(?) are not not clean enough what ever that means. I tried running my automotive style battery on my 8 kw generator and it behaved very poorly and that is what I was told caused the poor performance.

Re: How big of generator needed to charger
The inverter type generators using computer controlled PWM output produce a clean sine wave. The Honda EU series, like the EU3000is, uses that method.

Inverter type. Seen those. That's good to know and look for.

Re: How big of generator needed to charger
Not only will the inverter put out cleaner power, but it probably is quieter too. Are the inverter type units more expensive than the regular type?

Re: How big of generator needed to charger
Is at least a 60% premium in the initial purchase, but because the voltage output and frequency is not tied to the RPM, it can run at a lower RPM and use a lot less fuel. It is also very quiet compared to a regular generator, this feature value may vary depending how you plan to use it....
I like the 12v dc outupt they ussualy have, that is very handy. |
