Thumbs down getting reading from post to plastic case??

This is a wierld one..From what I know about electronics the plastic case is not a supposed to be a conductor of electricity..I get a voltage reading from the postive post to the case of the battery..the battery was dirty on top and I saw a scum all around the post so I cleaned the top off with air hose and wash down the area with rubbing alcohol and I was still getting reading almost as high as the negative...the other batteries also have a reading but not as high the one..on further investigation if I reverse the leads on meter (digital read out) the voltage may be higher..the reading are only on the top of the battery and not on the sides..for past history look at my past post for the last week.

Sure you have shadowman, it's called surface discharge. It is the reason we tell people to keep the batteries clean. The batteries will buildup a coating on the tops that will conduct electricity. Dirty batteries can and do self-discharge much faster than clean batteries.

Ok than I am not crazy....what is the best cleaner for getting rid of this buildup..I have tried to using alcohol, baking soda, mineral paint thinner and just plain water...there must be something else that can clean the tops better..you can see the sludge, it is still conductive

Most use baking soda and water with a bit of elbow greas. For stuborn cases I go to the big guns. One is a Permatex product called 'Battery cleaner' and the other is a Deka product called 'Battery cleaner spray' both spay on foam up and rise off. Follow directions & Good luck.
