what's keeping this motor attached to the gearbox?
What am I missing to remove this motor from an 81 club car?

Probably just stuck on in the splines of the gear box....can be a real pain to get off!

Re: what's keeping this motor attached to the gearbox?
In answer to the question in your thread title, that would be rust. The armature rusts onto the rear end splined shaft over the years and causes one heck of a headache when you have to pull the motor.
And yikes - that's a lot of rust and looks like some rear end grease leaked out over the years. Not sure about that particular motor design, but on the ones a little newer you gotta get the casing off the motor first, leaving you with the armature stuck to the rear end splined shaft, then carefully (If you plan on reusing the motor) get it off there. Like CT said, this can be a HUGE pain, especially with the looks of that motor setup. Be really patient, it's likely going to take you a while, and good luck! |

Re: what's keeping this motor attached to the gearbox?
Thanks for your posts! I got it off shortly after. Basically I pulled the end cap off with a chisel punch set; then started to hammer the motor to get it loose. After a while I could get my chisel with the gearbox and motor. After awhile gravity did its work and it fell off.
It was a pain in the ***... |

Re: what's keeping this motor attached to the gearbox?
On a newer cart, pulling the motor is a breeze. Unhooking wires, unbolting, and crawling under and being careful not to drop the thing on my head while sliding it off the rear end shaft takes me literally about 10 minutes total. On carts that are older or have set outside a lot in moist areas, pulling the motor is done easiest by taking the time to remove the whole rear end. I've got one back home that the shaft's been soaking in PB blaster for a while, and hopefully when I get back home this weekend I'll be able to get the thing off there without any damage. Glad you got yours to come loose!

remember the armature or the part that gets stuck on the shaft is the one thing you should try not to damage, as that's most important when you need a motor core.
And some never seize on the shaft before the new motor goes back in. |

Re: what's keeping this motor attached to the gearbox?
I had one stuck one time...worked on it for days. WD40, let set....pried pulled etc....finally one day I pushed the cart about 20ft and the motor fell off onto the floor. Best I could figure the whole motor was cocked a little and was obviously spinning while I pushed (not bolted up) and the vibes loosened it up.
