Default Charger question for a 2006 IQ

First, I was a member here some time ago. Lost all contact info so I am signed up again.

second is the question.

I am working with or on a 2006 IQ that my in-laws gave to my boys a few years back. It was sued and the folks they got it from were EZ Go dealers and no help with questions.

We use it primarily at hunting clubs.

In year one which was 3 seasons ago, the boys would ride it around at the club and then plug it in for a charge and the charger would peg out at 15. I wondered about this because at home it always stopped right at or just above 10. The reading at 15 was enough to bother me that I would not let it charge for a long time and then just let the boys travel again. This was in a real hilly area of SC. and the old cabin was in a remote area with an exclusive power line coming to our cabin. None of the other electrical appliances seem to have issues but I was being safe. When we got home I resumed charging and it started around the 10 amp marker.

Second year, we used it at a farm in the sandhills of SC. Not real hilly or near as much as the first year. The batteries held up well and I only charged at home as I recall. If there was a problem I do not remember it. My camper did fine when plugged in. Nothing burned down.

Tear three, starting this past weekend. We were at a new club a few of us started on 2,981 acres. Lots of firm roads, some mud, a little sand and a few steep climbs and descents paths. Kids ran the batteries way down. It barely got up on the wagon. While there, I tried to plug it into the power box that was just installed. This box is more that a mile to the nearest building. Power from it is running our pump out of the 220 and there are 4 three prong plugs just like what I have in the house. I plugged the charger there and it pegged at 15. I left it for a while to watch it and then unplugged it and the kids rode around again for a while before hunting.

When I got home and plugged it in the reading started at 10.

Why do y'all think I am having such fluctuations on the amp gauge of the charger. I am worried that I may have bad power sources but nothing else is hurt. Is it reading so high because the kids run it so far down??

Batteries seem to be fine. They hold charges over long periods of no use. Nothing gets hot but the charger gets right warm. I plan for new battery cables. Terminals are clean. This beats me.

Thanks.

Welcome back!

Do you have a Powerdrive 2 charger?
The charge cycle should start around 15 amps (all the way to right) then slowly drop over the cycle and eventually finish at 0 with the charger off.
Make sure you are using a grounded 110 outlet.
The cycle can take up to 16 hours. At 16 hours, the OBC will shut off the charger if it hasn't already finished.

There may be the problem at my house. It was built in 1955 old and I use a plug adapter because the house is not properly grounded or rather does not have the three prong plugs. I need to call the electrician most likely.

I noticed one other detail yesterday. One of the battery terminals looked like melted soldier. Loose nut.

Let me add to this about the charging and it may make no difference but after letting charge for about 8 hours Monday, and the charger had apparently done its job, I topped off the water yesterday and went for a ride. When I got back home and plugged in the charger it went up to about 6 or 7 and started its slow creep back down as it charged. The charging must be working somewhat good at the house. Next time I take it to the club I will plug it in before driving or at least taking a short spin and see what happens.

Also note this cart has two different pairs of batteries. A test with a multi meter showed them to all be about level.

Watch for the continuing saga of the errant charger.

When I connect my charger it pegs the needle and then slowly comes down. This happens even when I have only driven for a short time. It does not take very long to come off the peg when it has been a short drive. Thought this information might be helpful.

And I have to use a 50' extension cord at the house. It is HD. The plug on the cord is where the plug adapter is.

I have another issue at the house I am going to have a friend to look into and I will ask if he can install a grounded terminal out near where I charge all my batteries.

I am getting a lesson in Electrical Engineering 101. I seem to have forgotten a bit since my 1973 physics class in high school.

An electrician buddy 110 miles away says I need to not use the extension cord. I need to put a plug closer to my charging station. What I need is a good grounded plug, period.

Yes, I know in my manual it says not to use an extension cord with the charger.
And yes, get yourself a grounded 110 outlet near your station and you should be good to go.
