Default Voltage Reducer Question

We are planning on a small winch for the 98 Club Car build. We will do a stand-alone 12V marine deep-cycle or AGM. So my question is, those with experience with a voltage reducer like this one:

Voltage reducers! 36-80v to 12v 30A

do you see any issue in using a rocker switch to turn on the voltage reducer ONLY when the cart's charger is plugged up. This would not only recharge the carts bank of batteries, but would supply a charger for the winch/ACC battery. I plan to have plenty of battery AH for the 12V system for the normal course of the day, so no need to draw off the cart's bank all the time.

I may look into trying to use a relay turn the voltage reducer on automatically when the cart's charger is plugged in.

Thoughts, concerns or other ideas?

This is a good reducer for most 12v needs. However, use with a winch is not recommended because the draw can exceed the 30a rating. Since a winch is an occasional use accessory it is best to wire it directly to a 12v battery source.


As for your charging question = The reducer limits out put to about 13v which is not enough to properly recharge the 12v battery.

Thats the plan The winch will be wired directly to the 12V ACC battery. The voltage reducer would only be used to replenish the ACC 12V battery at the end of the day when the cart is plugged back in.

Using the cart's charger to replenish the 12V ACC battery through the reducer while the cart is recharging, seems like a more efficient method as opposed to having a 12v charger dedicated to the ACC battery, that needs to also be plugged in.

If these units peak at 12.0V, then yes, you are right, it will not recharge a depleted battery.

I did not see this statement earlier. This is exactly the info I needed. If I can indeed get 13V out of it to my ACC battery, then im in the house! That will get the job done for me. The winch would be used on a very rare occasion, so plenty of juice to pull the cart out of a rut. At this point, there will not be any other 12V accessories drawing off that battery on a regular basis.

A voltage reducer isn't designed to be used as a battery charger. It is not going to do the job. You might be able to find a charger that would work off of the main pack but I think you will have to charge the aux battery from an AC supply unless you can find a charger designed to run off of your main battery.

That is interesting, I have never heard of anyone trying to charge a 12v battery with a voltage reducer...
But yes, a 12v battery needs I think around 14 volts to charge it.

I totally get that its unconventional, but im not sure its totally out of the question.

Im open to ideas, so how are others with electric carts and a standalone 12V ACC battery, maintaining the battery? I want to avoid having to plug up 2 chargers, so thats why im exploring alternative means.

the voltage reducer puts out 12.8, you need around 13.8 or so to charge, if you want to maintain and or charge the stand alone 12v then this will do nicely http://batteryminders.com/store.php?..._home&&app=atv

or you could just wire your winch to two batts in the pack, not recommended,it will power the winch fine, and you avoid another charger, but will put your pack in a severe imbalance
