Default charger ammeter pegs out

Got a club car here dead in the water. plug the charger in and it pegs the needle. Do I have a shorted cell in there or something?

Does it trip the breaker, or does it continue to charge. If the breaker trips, i would be looking at the rectifier.

Double check and make sure you don't have one battery hooked up backwards!

Also, you didn't say... Did it run fine until now? Did you change out the batts? More input would be handy.

You probably have one or more dead cells. That will make the charger ammeter peg.

sorry, I never got back to this. I was expecting an email notification when someone replied, and never got one.
anyway, I left the charger on and the needle eventually dropped until the batteries were fully charged, and the charger shut off. The aluminum body of the charger got wicked hot, but that was it.

Yeah it shouldn't get that hot, and the meter shouldn't go that high. I've never heard of a charger doing this before.
It should either be right on 15 or slightly lower when it starts. Then it should go down to around 5 within the first hour or so, then charge for several hours around 5 before it shuts off completely. At least that's how mine charges...
