Default Battery reverses voltage

1991 CC 36v. Would run great in reverse but hardly move in forward. Half voltage for reverse. Checked batteries and noticed one, right side last one, was just a bit lower than the others. put VOM on the battery. Read +6.2v hit the go pedal and it went to -5.8 negative voltage. What causes a battery to do that? All others are about 6.35v.

Hmm, that's weird, what do the other batts do in the pack when you test them?
Do you have a good battery in your DVM?

Dumb question, but is it hooked in series the correct way??

Makes since that it's one of the right side ones giving you troubles if reverse is working properly. Reverse on the older carts, if hooked up for the factory half speed, gets its power from the three batteries on the left (driver's) side. I've never seen the particular problem you're describing, but something is definitely wrong!

Keep us posted!

Yes they are hooked up in series correctly. Was running good until yesterday.

Yes goes back to normal when I let off go pedal.

I actually have had this happen on another golf cart before. Switched out battery and all was good again on the other cart. Will have to switch this one out and try again......By the way batteries are at the end of their life cycle, just pushing them as far as they will go. It is my beater cart to run to the mailbox and back 1200 ft round trip.

Nope not the reason here....must be the store bought water causing it...never used A/C water in these batteries!!

Ok so they are at the end of their life..why would that cause it to reverse polarity?
