1990 ds wont hardly move
ok installed a 6inch lift kit with big tires me and the wife were riding started smelling something like it was hot ,made it home the little girl went to school on it today she went for a 5 minute ride and it just stopped new batteries new wires batteries checked out good, push the pedal and it moves just enough that you can hold it, when they pushed it back the motor was about 150 degrees, where do i start checking?i did pull the cover off the slide controler the arm is making contact, and when i check the solenoid from big end to big end i had 36.5 volts until i pushed the pedal down then it zero out,1990 ds 36 volt

Re: 1990 ds wont hardly move
to BGW!
Is the cart a resistor or solid state with a controller? If you see coils behind the batteries near the motor, it is a resistor; if no coils, it's a solid state. Chances are the lift is putting extra strain on the electrical system... |

Re: 1990 ds wont hardly move
Ok, the bigger tires are putting a lot of stress on the electrical system, therefore making the motor hot, and the burning smell.
Your cart would be a perfect candidate for a scottyb upgrade kit. Here is a link to his page: http://cartsunlimited.net/Scottyb_s_Conversion_Kit.html Read the whole thing, it is very good information... |

Re: 1990 ds wont hardly move
There ain’t no magic bullet.
Your problem is you put oversize tires and wheels on a cart that wasn’t up to it. I don’t know if a controller will do you any good or not. I can’t find a lot of information on these controllers other than they are PWM (Pulse Wave Modulation). Rather than using a resistance to provide a voltage drop to the motor for lower speeds they provide a series of full voltage pulses. It’s also called a chopper circuit. Now on the amperage. A man needed a length of heavy chain which he bought at the hardware store. He’s dragging it to his truck when a little boy sees him. The little boy asks, “Hey mister, mister, why you dragging that chain?” The man replies, “You ever try to push one?” The same is true of amperage. You can’t push it, the motor and the load will determine the amperage. Those current rating you see on the controllers is what it is capable of providing usually maximum short term. Confused? I notice the stores are getting ready for Christmas. Go buy a cheap TOY train set. Set it up and run it. Put some weight in the cars and see how fast it will go what you can pull. Now go to a model railroad hobby store and buy a GOOD powerpack (say MRC) to replace what came with the set. You should see much better control at low speed but not an appreciable increase in power or maximum speed. We’re not exactly comparing apples to apples because the better powerpack will have a better transformer which is somewhat comparable to upgrading your cables to a larger gauge. If you usually run flat out at WOT, a controller won’t solve your problems. You can swap to a high torque motor or change to a lower (higher number ratio) gear set to get you back where you were. You didn’t say how big of tires you put on it but putting monster truck tires on a VW bug ain’t gonna turn out well without other modifications. As far as the motor, you probably did some damage especially since it was run ‘til it quit. If you still have the old tires and wheels, put them back on and see how it acts. Like crash test dummy said, get a full charge on the batteries, check the water level and make sure all connections are tight. |

Re: 1990 ds wont hardly move

Re: 1990 ds wont hardly move
You may have just melted the v-glide, specially if the kids were not ridding it at full throttle. You could check it and replace it, but it will likely happen again... 25 inch are pretty big tires and the motor will need a lot of current to get them going.
