Replaced the steering wheel

Well, I finally replaced the steering wheel on my old 1997 CC DS. When you folks said the old steering wheel might be reluctant to come off, you weren't kidding. The center nut came off easily with a socket wrench. Then came the fun part. I soaked the thing with PB blaster for several days, and beat on it with a hammer, and pulled it every which way. It didn't budge. Finally, I got the dremel out and started cutting away the plastic. I removed all the plastic of the steering wheel, all the way down to the metal spline(?) or collar. I used a chisel and hammer on it and still it didn't budge. I continued to soak it in PB blaster. Then, I started to cut a couple of grooves in it with the dremel. It got really hot, so I gave it a shot with the hammer again and it popped right off. The solution in this case was the heat. The new steering wheel went on easy and works great.

Wow thats pretty crazy! When I replaced my steering wheel on my 99 it was pretty difficult took a lot of pounding with a hammer. Just last week i replaced the steering wheel on my 1985 club car. I took the center nut off lifted up and it popped right off with no force at all. I guess it just varies cart to cart haha

I have been lucky I guess and have never had to remove one of these things, but I have also heard mixed stories- sometimes it comes off effortlessly, other times you use all your strength and it doesn't budge...

Pre air bag days we used to have to use a steering wheel puller on autos. Wonder if that would work.

The one I used on my 68 Mustang would not work on the Club Car. Nothing to attach it to.

mines a 91 ds and the nut that holds the steering wheel on has a threaded hole in the middle that you screw another smaller bolt into kinda like a wheel puller,worked great, does yours have this threaded hole?you loosen up the big nut a little then thread in the smaller bolt...........

Haven't seen the smaller threaded hole in the middle before, but I have used a two jaw gear puller several times with a good success rate.

To do this: Loosen up the bug nut, but don't take it all the way off (this is so if the wheel pops loose abruptly it wont fly off at you) then put the stem of the gear puller in the indent of the steering shaft and hook the jaws on the back of the wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock. (93 and up plastic wheels) tighten it down and let some PB Blaster soak on the wheel where it meets the splines of the steering shaft. After a while, tighten the puller a little more and see if the wheel will come off. If it doesn't, smack on the end of the gear puller stem with a hammer a few times, tighten a little, and repeat. If the wheel begins to bend badly, repeat soaking with PB Blaster and wait, then do other steps again.

This method has worked out for me several times, sometimes its frustrating and time consuming, but in the end it has always yielded in an undamaged steering wheel coming off.

Now that you have the new wheel installed, remove it and coat those splines with anti-seize, then reinstall the new wheel. It will always be removable in the future.

I'm with Gorno here, I anti-seized the splines when i put the aftermarket wheel on.

Had the same trouble with mine a couple of weeks ago. Finally heated it up, and got it off. Anti seized splines before installing new one.
