Default Golf Cart Security ?

What is the best way to secure a cart that is stored outside? My 3 week old 04 Precedent was stolen last week. It was found two days later with a lot of damage. I had a heavy 5/8 braided cable and a large Master lock attached to a tree but to no avail, they even took the cable and lock so I do not know which one they cut.
Does anyone have any ideas, is there a wheel lock system or some other means to secure?

there's a club looking thing at autozone i'm getting it hooks around the steering wheel and then locks down to the brake so brakes are locked down and steering is locked. it's $17-19 at autozone though.

When I'm done building my cart it will have an actual alarm system installed, secured in a locking steel box so they can't just quickly/easily disable it. Battery backup siren too, so even cutting wires or disconnecting battery won't make it stop.

I have seen people use the "club" that EVLLS1 mentioned as well. The regular car don't really work on carts that well, because cart steering doesn't LOCK, and the parking brake on a cart is in the DOWN position, whereas in a car the "club" locks the brake pedal in the UP position and keeps you from pressing it down. Most clubs are EASILY defeated though, in various ways. One is simply sitting in front of it and PULLING with great force towards you, and many of them will bend or break, or the steering wheel will bend and the club falls off. Some thieves simply cut through the steering wheel right next to the club hook, and slip the club off the wheel through that cut spot. Some are easily picked.

Chains, cables, locks don't defeat every thief, as you found out unfortunately, because some are capable of picking locks, or using LARGE bolt cutters and cutting the cable/chain/lock, OR carry a cordless sawzall or dremel and cut through it. It's hard to beat a determined thief. Your best bet is of course securing it indoors, AND with a chain.

Another good method is a "boot" type lock on/through the wheel. Something solid steel, not as easily cut with bolt cutters or saws. That keeps the cart from being rolled away. We use similar devices to lock through the brake disc on motorcycles, but with a motorcycle they just bring a couple friends and lift it into the back of a truck. They won't do that with an electric cart very easily though!

the one i saw actually presses the brake down and locks with a key. if you put the hook end over a fork in the steering wheel it's locked in place. it's an updated "club" like there use to be on tv ads lol.

it'd work perfect for a cart

Yeah, I think I saw one marketed for golf carts on ebay or somewhere the other day, and it was like that too. There are always ways to build new gadgets to help make things a little more secure. I like the club with the built in stun-gun that was around a while back. That one could be fun.

There is a kit for a quick disconnect steering wheel like the race guys use. Cart's pretty useless if you take the wheel with you.

That's a decent idea too, at least they wouldn't be driving it off, but if they're trying to truck it somewhere, it probably wouldn't deter them too much. It's easy to move a cart without a steering wheel (just push on the front tires either direction and they turn, especially while rolling), so all they'd have to do is get it out to the street or alley or whatever, and line it up with the truck/trailer/etc..

I am getting ready to install two security items on a cart that has already been stolen and recovered. The guy doesn't want it to happen again so we are setting up a short term ingnition off switch that will be hidden in a place he can easily turn off as he gets off the cart. Hopefully that will deter anybody from jumping on, using a common key and driving away. We are also going to install a race car style + lead disconnect with a removable plastic key that can be connected to his key chain for longer term parking. Either way though overnight parking can't be deterred unless you park it indoors or have a security system on it and are quick enough to answer the door with a smith and wesson.

Always park mine inside garage or in my trailer if I'm traveling. They are too easy to snag if left out.

Can't tell you how many times at rally's we hear about a cart being stolen.
