Spinning Motor S1 stud

I was replacing the wires in my 81 Electric CC and one of the motor studs won't tighten and keeps just spinning. Can I fix this or do I have to buy a new motor$$$? It goes forward but when I put it in reverse it smokes the wires with out even pushing the pedal. Thanks for the help

These studs can not be allowed to spin! They are double nutted. The lower nut keeps the stud from turning. You must always use two wrenches on theses - one on each bolt to loosen or tighten them.
Well, now I don't know I would remove the motor and open it up to see how much damage has been done. The smoke is what is worrying me....

the smoke is coming from the wire from the motor to the batteries, it is getting really hot and melting the plastic on it. they don't get hot at all in forward but when I put it reverse they get extremely hot and smoke.

You have a short, maybe inside the motor?

yeah, thats what I was thinking. Is there anyway I can get into the motor and fix it? They have brushes that attach to the studs online to replace them but I'm not sure how difficult that would be and they are $60. Has anyone done this?

take the motor out and open it up if your licky the broke one isn,t attached to the feild coil......2 are 2 arn,t but 1st thing is to open it and find out what one broke.......they do sell repair kits....................................

cool thanks, I'm hoping it's one of the ones that is attached to the brushes. Where can I get the repair kits from?

if its one of the brush ones it will come on the new brush its part of it, the other 2 i beleive are on the feild coil and it will come attached already........they sell the nuts,bolts and fiber washers in a kit if you want to try soldering on instead of replacing brush or feild coil you need to use silver solder........should be able to get the kit at the same place who has the brushes........................................... ......

well I decided I would tear into my motor last night, the A1 stud wires were broke off and the brushes were wore way down. It was surprisingly easy. I'm going to order new brushes and insulation kits. Will new brushes make the cart any faster?

GETTING THE MOTOR BACK IN IS HARDER THAN GETING IT OUT....The brushes need to be depressed.
