02 IQ Cart Fire
I got my new project cart done in time to use it hunting for the weekend. Last night me and a buddy took it out for a spin. We were cruzing down the road wide open and then the cart just shut off, coasted a little then was working again then shut off. So coasted off road and I smelled something burning. I then look down and flames are coming out underneath cart. My buddy is paralyzed so I just drag him off the cart. I pull seat to put fire out. I look under cart and both my brake lines are on fire. Very hard to blow out burning plastic with mouth. I worked on break lines last weekend, they were froze up so took off and freed up with a bunch of wd40. cart has been running well so kinda confused what happened. Have only been driving cart for a week so this weekend was the test. Redid all wires and put a new end cap from d&d on motor . 02 IQ, 600 DCX ALLTRAX , 11.4 D&D torque motor.
Pictures coming later after hunting. Thanks Steve |

Re: 02 IQ Cart Fire
Wires to controller motor etc seem ok not burnt, it was dark and didn't look long . I wonder if motor shorted out and brake lines carrying current ?? Cart still rolls free

Re: 02 IQ Cart Fire
I have heard of motor short grounding via the brake cables. And I have seen (old type) WD40 be very flammable.

Re: 02 IQ Cart Fire
When I bought cart motor was box in pieces. Brushes were shot so ordered new. Armature seemed ok, not much to it I guess. So just cleaned up and reassemble

Re: 02 IQ Cart Fire
Why would a motor ground out if spins free? This is a stupid question but the armature is just solid not hollow ? Something would make noise in it if you shook it, just sounded like a little trash ? I did notice this before I put together.

Re: 02 IQ Cart Fire
I guess the fire was really that bad, the pics don't really so much except smoke on the batt area and the brake cable melt.
Any thoughts how I should trouble shoot this? Thanks Steve |

Re: 02 IQ Cart Fire
So can an armature just go out? I wonder what D&D wants money wise to rebuild a motor? What I was saying earlier is, you could shake the armature and something loose would rattle in it, I didn't think they were hollow? just sounded like somthing small.

Re: 02 IQ Cart Fire
. . . without disassembling the motor, and knowing what to look for, it is hard to tell "why" a motor failed . . . if some "foreign debris" got into it, such as a bearing failing and pieces got into the windings causing it to short/ground out through the armature shaft via the bearings to the outer case, that could be one cause . . .

Re: 02 IQ Cart Fire
Lessons learned , should have sent armature motor to d&d to checkout also never fused battery pack. Motor and Controller fried ! So much for bragging about my Craig list deal. Thanks for the help guys. Steve
