New member with cart speed issue
New member here from Columbia, SC. I have been reading on this forum for several months. I had been looking at either purchasing or building a cart for me to use at our hunt club, for sporting clays and for the wife and kids to ride around in the neighborhood with. After looking at what all was out there and talking with several cart shops around town I decided to have a reputable shop here in Columbia build me one. I ended up going with a 48V 2009 Club Car Precedent and had them add the following:
6" Madjax A-arm lift kit, 22x11x12 Sahara Classic A/T tires, 12" black aluminum wheels, Realtree Camo dipped body, rear flip seat, brush guard, gun rack, clay basket, light kit, tinted folding windshield, new 8 volt Trojan batteries, 4 gauge wires and a 400 amp Alltrax controller. I have a LED battery meter on order from ScottyB that should be here on Tuesday. This way I will be able to monitor battery voltage precisely. I wanted the stock controller upgraded to give me plenty of torque when I went shooting or hunting with my father and my 2 young sons or when I am hauling a few bags of corn around the club. Plus, our neighborhood has a few hills in it that I didn't want to be slowed down too much on. The guy that built it said the 400 amp controller would work nicely with the stock Precedent motor. Anyway, I picked the cart up from the shop Thursday afternoon and unloaded it in the garage and put the PowerDrive2 charger on it that came with the cart. The charger appears to be working fine and I could hear the batteries bubbling a few hours later. The batteries are all Trojan T-875 with a date stamp of K3 so I would think this means they are November 2013 batteries. Well, this evening we finally had a chance to take it out around the neighborhood for a test drive and when on flat ground it seems to run pretty good but as soon as you start up a hill it slows to a crawl and acts like it is running on dead batteries. When you first step on the accelerator pedal it takes off and almost barks the rear tires but then it feels like it starts to loose power after a few seconds. I have a 1 year warranty on the cart and plan to take it back to them but what could this be? I did notice there was a wiring harness hanging off of the end of the motor so I plugged it back in to see if it made any difference but it didn't. I think I may have read somewhere that plug is for the speed sensor and it may not be needed with an upgraded controller. One other issue I noticed is that one or both of the front tires seem to be out of round as there was a lot of bouncing in the front end on the paved road. I checked all the tire pressures and set them at 15 psi. Is this a possibility and has anyone had problems with the Sahara Classic Excel tires? Is this something that may get better as the cart is driven more? Anyway, just wanted to say hello and pick your brains on these few issues. I am looking forward to using the cart and I know that these issues will be fixed but it is disappointing to get a new toy and have to wait for issues to be resolved. Thanks, StormH2Oguy |

Re: New member with cart speed issue
The batteries are new and need to be broken in, (I think it's something like 10+ charge/discharge cycles) for optimum run times.
The out of round tires however, should be replaced! my .02 |

You'll need to upgrade to a higher HP motor.

Re: New member with cart speed issue
I would also increase the tire pressure to 25psi. It's a good looking cart.

Re: New member with cart speed issue
The bouncing would be the result of state owned roads in Columbia. They want to inflate the gas tax to pay for pavement.
Welcome to the site. When you can, let me know who works on your cart around here. |

Re: New member with cart speed issue
Thanks for the replies and the compliments on the cart. I will be loading it up later this evening to take it back tomorrow and let them look it over. It has a 1 year warranty so I'm not worried about it. We use my inlaws stock Ezgo cart at the beach and it runs up hills much faster with the stock controller than mine does with the upgrades so I'm thinking that maybe the Alltrax controller programming just needs to be adjusted some.
As for the tires, I may see if they have a tire upgrade that is maybe of better quality. RPatten, I bought it from Custom Golf Carts of Columbia in Chapin, SC and they were great to deal with on giving me advice and getting it built like I wanted it so I'm confident they will not be hard to deal with on getting it right. I'll keep y'all posted on what they find out. Thanks |
