Why do I need six batteries?
I just purchased two club car electric carts. One serial number is
A8532 82692 and the other is A8416 5381 Both carts were last used at RV dealership to cart customers around. Both carts have only three batteries each. Both carts have not run in over a year. I intend to use the carts around the house only and then not often. My question is do I need six batteries or can I operate on three? My next question is with three batteries, is this a 36 volt system? Batteries are wired in series. I tried to log into the Club Car site but they said that I needed 11 or 12 numbers and or letters in the serial number. The numbers above are all that is on the plate. |

Re: Why do I need six batteries?
You don't but run time will be greatly reduced. They are an 84. and an 85 making them a resistor cart and they will have a very poor run time with 3 batteries.

Re: Why do I need six batteries?
a six battery system typically will provide you with the best power to weight ratio. There is a correlation between the amount of batteries and run time. Researching on here you will find many people with 8 - 6v batteries or 6 - 8v batteries .

Re: Why do I need six batteries?
Both of your carts are 36v. You can use either six 6v batts or three 12v batts.
The 6v batts will yield much longer run times and battery pack life... |

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that you need GOLF CART batteries, not automotive or marine batteries.

Re: Why do I need six batteries?
Thanks to all for your input. This was my first venture into a forum and did not know how to navigate through it. After posting my questions I read numerous threads and learned a lot.
I thought that the six batteries would provide longer run time but was not sure. Is there a problem of replacing the key switch with a toggle switch? The cart did not come with a key and there is a toggle switch on the dash once used for lights. This cart has had a hard life and appearance is not an issue. |

Re: Why do I need six batteries?
Any 20 amp on-off switch will work for ignition ... FYI so will a $10 generic car ignition from AutoZone.
PS Not only will automotive cranking batteries perform poorly in a golf cart but, they will die quickly under such severe duty use. |

Re: Why do I need six batteries?
On one cart there is a copper bus bar connecting all of the solenoids. The copper bus bar shows signs of being over heated. I suspect a loose connection. Any ideas?

You can find a key for around $2 on ebay but check the sposers and see if you can find it for less first.

The bar and the coils get HOT when you're running. Post a pic of what it looks like, that will help us diagnose it.
