Default Re: club car OBC not charging

I am not sure yet but try putting the black cable to opposite connections. Batt end to controller and controller end to batteries. it happens that these get reversed.

Default Re: club car OBC not charging

Here is my small guide on how to check the OBC, based on information found in this forum and my observations.

The tests below assume you have a good connection between the battery pack positive and the charger socket.
  • Check the continuity between the pack positive and the positive pin in the charger socket before proceeding.

Plug the charger to AC power.
Plug the charger to the cart.

IF the Relay in the charger does not turn on (click):
  • Disconnect the charger.
  • Check the fuse in the sense wire.
  • If the fuse is OK, set your Multimeter to 200vDC
check the voltage between the positive and and the sense wire
    pins in the charger socket
  • You should have approximately 40-45v
  • IF you don't have a reading:
    • The OBC is bad or there is a breakage in the continuity
between the OBC sense wire and the charger socket pin.
    • Use an insulation piercing probe to check the continuity
from the sense pin in the charger socket to a point
in the sense wire near the OBC.
    • If the continuity checks, Replace the OBC.
  • IF You have a reading:
    • The problem is in the charger Relay.

IF the Relay in the Charger Turns ON but no charge current:
  • Disconnect the charger:
  • set your Multimeter to 200vDC
  • check the voltage between the positive and and the negative
    pins in the charger socket
  • You should have approximately 36-42v
  • IF You don't have a reading:
    • The OBC SCR is bad or there is a breakage in continuity
between the OBC negative wire and the charger socket pin.
    • Use an insulation piercing probe to check the continuity
from the negative pin in the charger socket to a point
in the black wire near the OBC.
    • If the continuity checks, Replace the OBC.
  • IF You have a reading:
    • The problem is in the charger.

If you don't have an insulation piercing probe, use a sewing needle or a hat pin.
Make sure to put liquid tape on the probing hole to avoid corrosion later on.

If you ever need to by-pass the relay in the charger, or the OBC activation circuit, You should also by-pass the SCR in the OBC by running a 10Ga black wire from the back of the charger socket to the pack negative.
If the OBC is not in control of the charger, excessive or prolonged current charge could damage the OBC.

If the sense circuit of the OBC was found to be damaged, make sure to test the voltage suppression diode on the charger relay before plugging the charger to the new OBC.
