Asked that the cables be changed
When I got new batteries earlier in November, I asked the dealer to go ahead and change the battery cables over to 4 gauge as I anticipated some upgrades. He did not do it. Instead he put in new cables all the way around, at least between the batteries and not the motor. These cables were cut and made in the shop. He said there was no reason to until the upgrades were started.
Keep in mind that this was the same dealer that told me the switch to speed setting 4 would reduce torque.... Couple of questions: Would it have hurt anything to go ahead and switch the cable? Is it not beneficial to change out the cables going to the motor? And wouldn't you have thought that an anti corrosion treatment would have been applied to the cables and other hardware at the batteries? OK, that was 3 questions. |

Re: Asked that the cables be changed
Changing the size of cables is always a must if you upgrade. The larger size cable allows more flow.... It wouldn't hurt anything to change them over before you do the upgrade on your other components, I actually did just that waiting for some of my stuff to come in, and switched over all the motor, controller cables after I installed them to make sure the location of controller, solenoid, reversing contactor didn't change. 4ga is now the minimum on most 400amp+ upgrades. I did 2ga to make sure everything was better than the minimum. Check out the site sponsers, they sell some cable kits for most carts

Re: Asked that the cables be changed
If possible find a new dealer.
Just to clarify: You asked them to upgrade your cables and they installed stock 6ga cables? It wouldn't hurt anything to go ahead and change the cables and especially include the the motor cables. It's one of them seat of the pants things. You can't measure any difference but you can sure feel it. I'm told and I believe you don't have to change the small field cables. As for the anti corrosion. Stay away from copper lugs. The tinned cable ends do good w/o any treatment. (with proper maint) If you're doing it be sure to solder and crimp cables. Use flexible battery cable. Put heat shrink over the soldered ends to make it look pretty. An old wood working saying. "Do it right the first time and only cry once" |

Re: Asked that the cables be changed
Yes, I asked for 4.
Copper lugs? The cable probably came off of a spool. All appeared freshly cut. 40 years ago when I worked in a service station we would ALWAYS use cable made for a vehicle on the batteries. Now, to me, it seems that a vehicle that is based to move on electricity you should be more particular. And just for my clarification, "small field wires" do not mean the cables going to/from the batteries for power does it? They did not replace those and perhaps those are permanently attached to the motor. I have not looked but I would be very surprised. RE-Reading your answer there, no, they did not change the motor cables and those are not the small field cables you were referring to. And I specifically asked that all power cables be upgraded. To me it was a given way to make money. |

Re: Asked that the cables be changed
Going back and looking at the cables a little better, they are put together in an awfully neat manner with some nice crimping. Maybe they are factory made.
None of what they installed appears to be copper. And the connectors aren't copper. I suppose those are the "lugs" referred to. At the same time, I would have polished up a bit the "lugs" connecting the motor cables to the batteries. These have copper in them. |

Re: Asked that the cables be changed
Your dealer may not have larger cable or the lugs and tools needed to attach them. Perhaps you should buy your own excellent cable set online and ask him to install them WITH A LITTLE DIELECTRIC GREASE..... its $4 for a tube at the hardware store. Safe bet to provide that too

Re: Asked that the cables be changed
the lugs are most likely copper and are just tinned ( looks like aluminum ). I did 2ga wire on mine. Got the welding wire, lugs, solder and made my own for under $75.00

Re: Asked that the cables be changed
CORRECTION When I said stay away from copper lugs I should have said un-tinned copper lugs.

Re: Asked that the cables be changed
I have always used copper lugs, without tinning, never a problem. I do maintain my equipment, maybe if I never checked on them they might get bad. Copper conducts electric better. IMHO

With the kind of work we do, there is no such thing as "factory" cables. So we use hi-strand count OFC cable off a bulk roll, cut to the needed length and then attach the ends. If your dealer used quality cables and a quality connection on the end, then custom made cables should be as good or better then factory. |
