87 club resistor coil gets very hot.
Just bought 87 club car 36v. After replacing the 1st coil ( master) the cart started working again. Drove it around for a couple of miles. I then realized the 3rd and 4 solenoids were not working. I went and bought 2 more solenoids. They worked.! Drove for about 400' and I could smell an electrical problem. The solenoids were not warm yet, but the resistor coil you could not touch. With just the 2 solenoids working it was fine. Got the other 2 solenoids working now its very hot. Is this normal?

I had a 68 Club Car with resistor coils and I can tell you that they do get hot and will have a "burning" odor similar to when you first fire up your furnace for the season. I have replaced a few solenoids here and there, but a good amount of heat can be expected.

Re: 87 club resistor coil gets very hot.
From what I am reading they get very hot. But it didn't before with only 2 solenoids working. I added 2 more solenoids and now its hot. Does that make sense. Just don't want to burn something up that cost me more dollars.

Re: 87 club resistor coil gets very hot.
The coils that were not working may have had crud on them that is burning off. Try cleaning them. (when they are cool) They do get very hot - that is how they regulate the power to the motor. (Old inefficient way)

Re: 87 club resistor coil gets very hot.
Since you have not had the cart long and you have replaced 3 solenoids already, my guess is you never had the correct power to the coils, that may be why they didn't appear to be quite so hot before.

Lol. I did bring a fire extinguisher with me drove for about 4 minutes. It was dark so I will give it ago tomorrow. The coils were very hot , the solenoids were cool. And it smells exactly like you heater when you first turn it on. So I guess its working good. Have you ever tried to cook bacon on them while you are riding around. :)
