Charger question
I have a 96 CC DS 48v series cart. When i would charge my cart i would plug the powerdrive charger with the round plug into the receptical. It would take a second for the charger to come on, then click off, then click on again and it would always charge and shut off when done. To me that is the correct opporation.
NOW for some reason when i plug the charger into the receptical the charger comes on once the plug is inserted. It does not shut off then turn back on, nothing. It just stays charging. The longest it has charged was like 15hrs and i did not want to let it keep going cause it has never taken that long to charge the pack before. I have not tried to let it go the 16hrs to the auto shutoff. I just know there is something wrong with the charger or i would guess the OBC. I did reset the OBC but there was no change. Any help is greatly appreciated ! |

Re: Charger question
I also have a '96, but its Regen (shouldn't matter) with the OEM Powerdrive I charger. I have always had the pause, on-off-on sequence that you described also. If you only get "on", then the charger is doing an "equalize" charge (which is the normal mode if you never move the cart between plug removal and plugging back in). I assume your moving the cart between charges, right? - so something has changed. Have you checked individual battery voltages after a rest period? I'm not sure how/whether the OBC changes with a bad battery in the pack - but maybe it reverts to equalize? I still have the original OBC which has a red dash light - is yours also red? Its worth checking the wire connections behind the charge socket and the OBC connections elsewhere in case one has become loose and is sending mixed info to the OBC (bit of a long shot).
Barring all that, then yes, I would suspect your OBC is faulty (although usually when they fail, you get no charging at all). |

Re: Charger question
Another test you can do to see if the OBC is working and able to control the charger relay is to leave the AC cord disconnected and plug the charger DC plug on the cart.
You should hear the relay turn on and the OBC should turn it off once it does not detect a voltage rise. If the relay never turns off, the OBC sense circuit may be shorted. |

Re: Charger question
I think you may have a "welded" relay in the charger, stuck in the on position. Does the charger click? If not, relay for sure...

Re: Charger question
If the charger relay is welded, the charger will come on as soon as it is plugged to AC power.

Re: Charger question
Yep, but you may not hear the transformer until its under load. With the charger plugged in (CAREFULLY!) check for voltage on the 2 longer charger handle pins with your volt meter.
