Broken Battery Cables
My cart was recently involved in a roll-over and some of the batteries went flying out, ripping the terminals off the cables that scottyb made for me. What to do?!?!?!? I need 4 cables fixed, or replaced.
I sent scottyb an email after calling them and hearing he was out for the holidays i assumed. I'm hoping I can just either send these back and get them repaired or just replace the cables individually. On another note, if the batteries were upside down for quite some time while we were getting the cart back up on its wheels, what should I look for as in "issues" other than water levels? |

Re: Broken Battery Cables
If in a roll over and the batteries were pulled out and the cables broke I would look at the battery posts.Check for any damage on the plastic of the batteries for cracks. The plates may have been damaged if violent enough.Wash down any place the battery acid was with baking soda and water. If the batteries lost lots of fluid they may need to be replaced as topping off with water may only top off fluids but the specific gravity may always be down.battery cable ends can be bought and replaced by crimping and then soldering them on the cable.

Thanks for the reply. The soldering part is where I'm unsure how guys are doing it. I can solder, but can't see how guys are soldering the connections so tight against the rubber shielding of the cables without melting the shielding.

Re: Broken Battery Cables
prepare the cable ends and tin them, tin the lugs and heat them and put them on the cable, a little heat may be added as you put them on, also a little solder may be needed. install heat shrink after they cool. if you are using the copper lugs. put them in vice or hold them with pliers and fill the hole with solder and insert the cable while solder is still melted and let cool.

Re: Broken Battery Cables
you can buy the lugs and solder slugs , shrink tube and repair the cables pretty easy yourself ,
place lug in a vice or vice grips, place slug inside lug , put a few drops off flux on cable, heat lug with torch and slid in cable . then down shrink wrap and shrink to fit . there plenty of youtube video out there to watch . |

Re: Broken Battery Cables
Send the cables back for free repairs!
You may need to rinse the acid off the cart and add acid back into batteries that lost fluid. And to everybody off-roading a golf cart .... use battery hold-downs. 99% of this damage was preventable with standard battery hold downs, holddowns keep the batteries in their trays in case of a roll over. Remember your average Battery Pack weighs 350 pounds. Have Fun and Be Safe out there! |
